      Kaspersky Announce Free Antivirus

      https://www.ghacks.net/2017/07/26/kaspersky-free-antivirus-worldwide-roll-out-begins/

Kaspersky Lab has announced that it will be offering free anti-virus protection for everyone by rolling out the base version of its software globally at no charge.

The free version contains the bare essentials, Kaspersky said, which includes file, email, and web antivirus; automatic updates, self-defence; quarantine; and a handful of additional features the blog post does not list.

The free-ware will be available come October in the United Kingdom, Ireland, DACH, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Israel, Maghreb, Benelux, Eastern Europe, Japan, and South Korea; while Vietnam and Thailand will need to wait until November.

Although reportedly downloadable, all links that I tried reverted to the Kaspersky home page.

I run Total Security 2017 and upgrade every year with a download which is always at a ‘reasonable’ price. (That’s code for ‘cba to look up what I paid last upgrade’)

There are many added features in the paid-for version, but for most regular users (not from this outpost of Geek Central!) the Free version looks fine. There are some voices in the USA making Trump – eting noises about a Russian – based AV installed on American PC’s and servers, but that fails to address the fact that (a) paid versions are already on millions of American machines and PC’s anyway and (b) it is one of the most popular and efficient AV’s in use worldwide. A conspiracy is everywhere nowadays in some places. The slightest proven whiff of any AV supplier’s hacking activities, would kill that company stone dead.

The Trump – eters also fail to recognise that Kaspersky Labs is based in the USA:     https://usa.kaspersky.com/

Kaspersky Free now available from the US site
            https://usa.kaspersky.com/free-antivirus

“Note that it may not be offered as a localized version right now. This downloads a stub installer which downloads the main package when you run the installer. The package has a size of about 140 Megabytes.”

There have been criticisms about having to create an account & having to register – both are now optional.

Requires 920 MB of free disk space & .Net 4 or later.
