Just been and got my self a secondhand Ipad 5. I swore to my self I would never touch an apple product. I have been to the extent were my mother and father have for example tried to show me something on there Ipad and I have out and out refused to touch there Ipads. In short I feel dirty, really really dirty. I would of felt less dirty had I gone to the so called “Massage Parlour” up the road from me @ £50 for half an an hour 😉 , Oh dear!
Any how I only bought it so when a customer says to me this doe’s not work on My Apple this, that and the other I can turn round and say “Yes it doe’s so behave your self” or “Yes Sir You Are Correct”.
Any how my question is, is there anything I should know? Any Tip’s? Any Recomended Apps?
I have already put the two main ones on I want, Chrome & Google mail app.
Thanking You In Advance.

September 8, 2018 at 4:29 pm #25734I have an ipad from work (Air 2 128GB 4G) and it is a very nice thing to use. Biggest thing I noticed app wise is that you have to pay for a lot of apps where you can get the equivalent funtions free on Android – not a complaint and I often upgrade to the pro version on Android to support the developer of a good app. The paid “File Explorer” on ipad is good and the one Ii would recommend. It also integrates well with other apps. IOS is a lot more locked down and I found it annoying coming from Android, probably more secure but still annoying.
Saying all of that I can’t see me buying an iphone at any stage but the ipad is nice to use, they have impoved multi-tasking and app-switching – batteyr life is excellent.
September 8, 2018 at 7:21 pm #25738When we had the ipad2, I really liked apple University. I thought it was the only decent thing about it tbh, and something Apple really undersold.
Back then there was no file managers or files, so it was a useless toy. However they ipad two was built like a tank, and the battery was great. At 5 or more years old it would still get 5h between charge.
The only reason it got shelved by my girl after about 6 years was she messed about in the settings and locked herself out. As we logged into it 6 years earlier, I had no idea of the username, email or password, so we couldn’t prove the ipad was ours, so it is softwear bricked.
Now given its age, it was slow, and basically a youtube machine, so I replaced it with a huawei tablet, that looked like mum’s P9 phone. Great sound omg. It’s still a youtube machine.
Apple uni is defo worth a look.
September 9, 2018 at 5:18 am #25752I have been using it a few hours now and I must say I am not impressed. The battery seems good but bar that I am sure you can get much more for your money outside of the apple echo system.
Nope, not impressed at all.

Well, I’ve never used an Android tablet and come away thinking that was a good exerpeince, so horses for courses!
I use my iPad Pro 10.5 regularly for work. I use the Site Audit Pro app a lot (I notice it’s now avaialble for Android), as it helps when I do my risk assessments but that’s hardly an app that everyone will want to use! This is often used alongside PDF Expert and Notability (I have the Apple Pencil). In general, most of the apps then are Android and iOS equal. I do use Apollo for Reddit, which the closest I’ve found for Android is Boost.
But I’ve found that more and more apps are cross platform anyhow.
iOS now has the file manager built in (Files) in iOS 11. It plugs in to web services and shows the files located there. Personally, I rarely use it – either using DS File, or accessing files directly in PDF Expert (or Documents)

September 9, 2018 at 8:03 pm #25757In a previous life Apple was the only machine for graphics designers and photographic work. That was yesterday’s situation. Apple has basically stood still for over 5 years and Windows machines have overtaken Apple for capabilities and grunt. On a bang for the buck, Apple does not come close.
However, Apple still leads windows in respect of fast start-up/shutdown. Windows machines are positively clunky in that respect. Apple also does not suffer from the interminable updates that MS Windows demands. Some updates have a reasonable security tag attached, but I reckon at least 50|% of the updates are just nice to have tweaks with a security label attached.
I know that many will cry out Linux!. However while it has many positives Gimp is pretty carppy compared with commercial software, and good as it is I still find Blender a pain to use. Linux really isn’t a good contender once you go beyond office and Internet software.
September 9, 2018 at 10:06 pm #25759I’ve never used a tablet and thought it was a worthwhile bit of kit. Especally as phones are now 6 inch and laptops weight nothing (if youe into that), so where does the tablet fit it?
When I had the iPad 2, I had a note2 (huge for its time at 5.4 inch iirc and my 13″ thinkpad.
I just didn’t kiel the iPad. I thought it was cos of ios, as is was dog shit back them, but I’ve since owned (still do) a few tablets (even in windows 8 (now 10)one, all for me are crap.
I can see them good for the likes of how mcdonalds use them. Or as point of sales devices. So mostly android. But as a work or even entertainment device the laptop and phone both beat them out?
My phone now is I think 6.2inch. I stopped counting around 5.8.
I recall my with having the sgs1 (about 3.8” screen) I came in with a HTC one x, at 4.8″ and she laughed for a week at my clown phone. She now has a P20 which is about 5.8. Hypocrit. Lol.
September 10, 2018 at 12:20 am #25760I bought a chinese 10″ tablet a few years ago, and ended up just using it to read comics, and have just bought a 2nd hand 8″ Argos special for £20 to put the motorbike manuals on in the garage. I’m finding that it’s a lovely size for me though. It’s a bit small for comics, but because it fits in my hand so nicely, I’m finding it better to use for random things like the odd Google search.
I think that of you find a niche for a tablet, they’re great, otherwise a phone or computer is more convenient. The phone is always there and always connected, and the computer is more powerful.
September 10, 2018 at 6:42 am #25771Back in January I replaced the ancient CCTV system at the Legion. To view the cameras from behind the bar they had an old TV mounted where everyone in the bar could see it.
So I bought a £85 10.1 Quad Core Android Lollipop Tablet 1280 * 800 IPS screen and mounted it on a stand like you see in shops. It’s on 24 x 7 and has been absolutely excellent.
September 10, 2018 at 11:03 am #25779I love my Lenovo Tab3 8″ tablet. Every morning at brekkers I boot it up and watch latest news reports, weather forecast and then read a Kindle or other e-book. I am also going to set it up as a satnav and see what it’s like: an 8″ screen will be good for me.
I also have a Hudl which works fine, (thanks Nolan!) trying to decide on a use for it. No intention of selling it.

I'm out.September 10, 2018 at 11:27 am #25780That’s my reasoning Dave, they are good if you have a purpose for them. I said POS and I’d class that as a dedicated monitor too.
They are good at looking at documents and pdfs too. If I have a loday to go through, I’ll use the Hudl2. By far my fav tablet I’ve owned. The girls hauwei is better, bit I like the feel of thd hudl2. It feels nice in the hand. Good size for docs too.
September 11, 2018 at 6:23 pm #25812If you have a table with one leg too short, you can use an iPad to help stabilise it. Genuine tip.
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
September 11, 2018 at 7:01 pm #25814Today I’ve been trying to find a way to help a local small business manage their affairs using 2 Windows laptops and an iPhone. The boss also wants to be able to do it from visits to Spain. Plus we have to keep it all GDPR compliant.
Playing with Apple / Google / Microsoft is great fun as they all fall out with each other and only allow certain things to interact with each other, but with a combination of all 3 we got there. Documents, calendars, emails (from 3 providers) and contacts all synchronising and editable on all devices and backed up. A bit clunky but it’s free and doesn’t require any user intervention to work.
A paid for solution, probably Office 365 for Business, would probably have been slicker but at an unacceptable cost.
September 11, 2018 at 7:19 pm #25815No idea if it would be viable Dave but a Chromebook with Android support might be an option for future jobs. I use mine or my phone for 90%, maybe more, of my uses. My X220 will be used more soon as I’ve been asked to make a few DVD’s of family events and so on.
September 11, 2018 at 8:20 pm #25820I had to work with what they had and there was no way the iPhone was going to go, now or in the future. That included what they had done software wise too, a huge investment in a Google calendar but the Contacts were in online Outlook.com and the phone. MS Office (2007) documents were scattered over the two laptops. The relevant user IDs were all different email addresses.
TBH I come across set ups like this a lot. They sort of know what they want to achieve and start down a route, then abandon it when it gets hard. Then they hear of something new and try that but don’t know how to bring the old stuff over. New email addresses are added and abandoned, but left going just in case. Quite often different projects are started by different friends/ family members who then get fed up “supporting” them and no-one knows quite how it works. Of course nothing is documented.
Technical ability is very limited so you have to stick with the tools they know and that means MS Office. But they do seem able to work with different email clients, they frequently have a different one for each address! Anything to do with sharing / synchronisation has to be automatic or it won’t happen.
