I made a start with this install earlier today. Some problems, but this one here, rest in “Two into One”.

I went through the install as normal. Possible clue to main problem:- Mint install wanted to install to my  250Gb spinner, which it identified as sda. I selected instead my 60 GB SSD which it identified as sdb. Install then proceeded normally.

It announced install was finished, and that I should removed the install media (DVD ROM), then press ENTER. The drive opened, I removed the DVD, and hit ENTER. Then again, and again, with no response. Eventually I pressed the OFF button, then after it shut down, I pressed it again to boot.

It ran thro to “Boot from CD –“, then just waited, and waited. Eventually, I switched OFF, Next Swtch ON, and  insert install DVD. I then selected “Boot from local drive”, and everything was OK. I did all the updates, had a general “look around”, then tried a restart.  Same again. I currently must start from the DVD then boot from local drive.

Help Please!

Les.

Look at the boot drive settings in the BIOS.

Progress but no progress. I screwed a few things up trying to sort the Home / data thing, and meanwhile I came to the same conclusion as Dave (but from a different direction). I shut down, changed the two main SATA cables over,  expecting to sort out the drive identities, which it did. After checking the bios to be sure, I did a second install of Mint 19 Tara. This time it chose the 60gb SDD as sda, so from then on every thing looked OK.

HOWEVER, with completed install, it then did exactly the same, with ENTER having no effect after removing DVD.

I did the same as before, insert DVD, switch on, then select “Boot from local drive”, and here I am again, NO wiser.

Totally unplug the spinner and try again.

If you can make a boot (even via the CD), can you post the contents of /boot/grub/grub.cfg and /etc/fstab

EDIT: So as not to make the post too long, examine /boot/grub/grub.gfg and just post the section that boots mint (you’ll need to scroll past the initial stuff until you find a section that looks like:

menuentry ‘Arch Linux’ –class arch –class gnu-linux –class gnu –class os $menuentry_id_option ‘gnulinux-simple-f333c31e-b315-4d8f-aacb-68a03f08512b’ {
load_video
set gfxpayload=keep
insmod gzio
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root=’hd4,msdos1′

Ignore that the entries are different from mine, I’m on Arch.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

Damn. Why does this forum not support

tags?

Dan, you just beat me to it, so just to say Dave is right as usual.

I meant to say last night that without the DVD, it said “entering GRUB rescue, but without success.

Anyway, after a late night, I disconnected the spinner, and it booted up without the DVD. Next I reconnected the spinner and it again booted up without the DVD, so that is that sorted.

Thanks both. Now for the sorting out of the HOME problem.

I still need to mount the spinner after mint runs, so I will tackle that next. Should be straightforward after last December’s advice.

Les.

I’ve added to your “two into one” thread, which may assist.
