Hi. My son has a Virgin 3 Hub, the wireless signal from which is pretty poor. I’ve given him my TP-Link W8970 router which he wants to connect in line with the Virgin – ie the TPLink will be the main router. He’s set the Virgin to Modem mode (which seems to be the correct setting for this application) and the TPLink to ADSL with DHCP enabled. However he can’t get it to work! My question is – what IP address should the LAN be set to on the TPLink? The Virgin address is 192.168.0.1 and the TPLink 192.168.1.1 (at the moment). Any help would be gratefully received. John

The TP-Link should be connected via Ethernet cable from the Virgin Hub to Port 4.

You then set it’s Operation Mode to Wireless Router and not DSL.

          Thanks Dave.

I gave my No.2 gson my old TP-Link router to connect from the house router downstairs. (It’s an old building with thick walls)

I have sent him the details you give here, with suitable changes for a different router to the Virgin Hub. He will probably say he knew that, but don’t they all?

Dave. Thanks for your reply.  Unfortunately no joy so far – it may have to wait until I can pay him a visit!

Bob – has your gson got it going?

            Cheers. John

He is working extra hours John, never know when he is in. Catch him at the weekend, I’ll let you know.

John, I have done a few of these now and generally they go OK. The thing to remember is that you are now not dealing with ADSL but Ethernet. The Virgin Hub is doing the “ADSL” bit and turning it into Ethernet, which is what the TP-Link would have been doing internally.

However on one occasion there was a Virgin Hub that just refused to work with a Draytek router. I know Drayteks well and have often used them like this but it wasn’t happening. This was in Lockdown I and the customers family business was being kicked out of their office. We were relocating the server to his house and setting up VPN connections so the rest of the family could remotely access it and an instant fix was needed. Went up to Argos and got a £30 TL-WR940N and it worked first time. I had to find another way to do the VPN but it’s been faultless.

Tested the Draytek on another hub and it’s fine. This is the sort of thing drives you nuts, he may be doing everything OK and it’s just not playing. Before you throw it through the window try a factory reset on the TPL. This is literally the only setting on the WAN page (it’s a live screen shot which is why I’ve obscured the IP address it obtained). No user names or passwords required, just set it to Dynamic IP and the Virgin Hub does the rest.
