At the moment I am backing up the site auto magicly by ftp to a server in france which is all good but I could do with more space to do the backups more frequent over a longer period. In other words, the space I have with out upgrading at the moment only allows me 5 site back-ups and 10 database back-ups. That is 1 days worth of databases back up and 3 days of site back-ups.

I want to double or tripple that. If anyone can donate 10gb’s worth to use along side what I have it would be much appriciated. The services I can use are below.

      • Backup to FTP
      • Backup to Dropbox
      • Backup to an S3 Service
      • Backup to Microsoft Azure (Blob)
      • Backup to Rackspace Cloud Files
      • Backup to SugarSync

I can set something up on my Synology if that’s any help? You’d be able to do it via FTP.

I think I’ve 2TB of space free so could certainly add a user with a reasonable size quota if it helps, though it is on my home connection (though is on a 53Mb download and 9Mb upload link) and only a single disk Synology so there are some limitations.

Let me check what I have on my VPS in Germany, though I don’t think it’s too much. However, if I have free space, provided the load won’t be excessive, you are welcome to use it.

          OK, I have 50Gb – 6.6 used.

It’s hosted on Debian, and is up mostly 24/7, but I have to restart from time to time since load can be heavy (It also hosts a private email server and an opensim server). Having said that, downtime is generally kept to a minimum (except right now, when I’m working on opensim upgrades that aren’t going that well).

EDIT: Drezha seems like the more favourable option.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

I’m glad more knowledge people have jumped in. I did offer, but said I’m probably least qualified. However I could follow a tutorial.

Lee couldn’t you set a pi up as an ftp server and what a cheap hdd to it. It is your home bandwidth bad. If your on adsl2 your  Up speed would probably be a no go. Ad if we did need the back up it would probably take an age to get it uploaded.

Out of intrest Lee, what is the current size of the forum. I be it’s very small. And would be Smaller if we didn’t upload photos. I know my pictures are usually quite big. Bit of imagine you compress the pics ? only Google and flicker don’t. FB are the worst offenders. Upload a fantastic photo and FB ruin it.

It’s why I always leave a link to the origanal full res version, along with the uploaded, kneecapped ones. Not that I blame you Lee. Your doing this out of love, with a few pounds.FB are running a multi billion dollar service.

10GB? Not a problem. If you can wait a couple of weeks I’ll have a 1TB Synology spare that you can have a chunk of. 100s of GB if you want.

I’ve got the Synology course in Manchester on 3rd of July after which I get a new chassis that will take over the duties for my business.

Temporarily I could set up an FTP target for you, there’s >500GB spare, and we can use the next few weeks to tweak things and look at any possibilities. Then when I have the new chassis up and running will reformat the old server with what we have learned in mind.

You have my email address somewhere, let me know.

I think if it’s ok i’ll take @ricedg and @drezha up on there offer. I do back up to my own ftp server at home but I am always moving things round and tinkering and I am forever setting up ftp servers. Also it would be I good idea to spread the back-ups around a little. I can set a back-up schedule to suit your times for bandwhith usage.

The back-up is about 2.5 gig at the moment. To answer @sgb101 images are squashed on upload sometimes but not to a point where they look rubish.

When and if you are ok to go ahead PM me with the FTP details and I’ll run a test back-up. Keep in mind that transfering a back-up of 2.5 G via FTP takes a while, It’s not the fastest means of transport ?
