      I had a problem with Freeview reception and a very odd fix.

      The signal I get from my communal loft aerial is strong but noisy. With an ordinary STB I would often get picture break up and some days half the channels would go missing, I tried a couple of different boxes but it made no difference. Then I signed up to talk talk TV and they sent me a You View box.

      Result ? Perfect picture on all freeview channels all the time ! The same is true now I have a smart TV but both go back to the previous crummy picture if I switch my router off and NO picture if I pull the aerial out.

        Hopefully you’re right Steve, and I can continue to use the Netflix.

        TCB, know what you mean – I live in a village that lies in the shadow of the Lincolnshire Wolds, which sort of curl around us. Reception of anything is bad: TV, DAB, but worst is mobile, a mast was supposed to be erected about 6 years ago but it has not happened yet. This extends down to my son & daughter’s village 6 miles away and their phone signal is patchy. Just 3 miles down the road the other way is Louth and it has perfect reception, plus a contest between Virgin and BT which Virgin mostly won. Which is funny, because BT have the local exchange in Louth. Now Louth has more Virgin cabinets than BT, and BT have started moving into the villages: even two years ago, we villagers were the Broadband poor relations. Now there are Openreach vans all over the villages, fitting fibre cabinets.

        TV was settled by a new transmitter option and a village resident who supplies and fits TV and comms commercially. That’s why there are really high aerials on all our houses, with heavy strapping around the mountings.  I eventually sorted DAB when I found an antenna that worked:  https://tinyurl.com/rse34ax

        I found the best reception for it was behind the TV, on the TV stand bracket. Now SWMBO gets clear radio when ironing. I spoil my lady! The bad reception has also stopped us getting a Smart Meter: even the latest Smets2 cannot work here. Tried it with my energy supplier EDF and also 3 others: input the postcode and all I get is “Not possible at this time for this postcode.” If you want Freesat at your location, unless you already have a dish you need to buy one.         Dishes are available on Ebay. Here’s a pretty good kit, for either Sky or Freesat, which is what is needed as the LNB will suit both:     https://tinyurl.com/v4hqd6l

        Make sure any fitter can tune the dish to Freesat.

          Looking around, it looks like the reception problem has been solved with the use of dishes (Sky, I imagine).

          The FVP 5000T gets some pretty good reviews around t’internet. So, I might focus on that.

            Was just talking to my son in Aus, and he said if he doesn’t use a proxy for Netflix he is logged into the Aus version with my account details. So they mustn’t be bothered about geo locking.

            My account is the family one so I don’t think Im under any threat of being closed down. It would be nice if more companies was like this.

             

            Lmy lad also said Aus Netflix is alot better than UK Netflix. But I suspect he is finding it better as he has watch most of that he likes on uk NF so Aus NF now seems to have more of what he likes. Or it well be better. But I think it’s the former.

              I’ve been on Netflix that I signed up for “in Turkey” for ages now – the line up you get is based on where you are not where you signed up. I think Duke is right, they don’t “actually” care even if they “officially” should – as long as you are paying them for it somewhere. They have clamped down on VPNs under pressure from the Studios but most suppliers have workarounds for that now – USA Netflix is probably still the best stocked.

                  Thanks Bob but you have misunderstood.
                  The Humax is not connected to the internet, that’s what the Rokku is for. The Humax gets its signal from the roof aerial, no pass through so the Humax must be switched on for the TV to get a signal.
