Hi guys, looking for advice. Currently almost finished the lounge after fireplace removal, having to do a bit and stop a bit. I have a week off from Chemo now and am going to reconnect everything, TV and other bits to go on a new stand tomorrow. I have: Sony Bravia RD40RD453 TV. Pic below:
Humax HDR-1100S:

LG DVD Player DP542H:

Pioneer X-CM32BTD CD Receiver system has Audio In & Phones port to front, too dark for pic:

ION USB record deck:

Samsung HW-259 Soundbar, with Optical, Bluetooth and Aux in: http://tinyurl.com/yadygdf7
My question is, how best to connect? DVD by HDMI I guess, {TV to Humax by HDMI, TV to Humax by HDMI ARC} or other way round? TV to Sound bar by optical Toslink.
CD Receiver to ION deck by Line IN/Out? I can connect the deck to a laptop for recording Vinyl. Anyone any suggestions? Getting it round my head a bit. TY for advice.

I'm out.September 17, 2018 at 8:24 pm #26027Hello Bob – firstly all the best with your treatment and get well soon!
Not sure about these USB decks, “normal” turntables always usedto needa dedicated input on an amp or to go through a pre amp firts as the levels were different – may not be the case with these newer devices but worth checking. Don’t use a sound bar but imagine if you can feed an optical out from the TV to the sound bar it would be simplest.

Of absolutely no help to you, Samsung have a ‘one connect’ box (only power+signal to TV). I was a bit dubious about this being a gimmick but after SWMBO decided on redecoration and a couple of room layout changes it really simplifies life in making connections to a wall-mounted TV, as well as making it easy to add security cam, games console and feed from a small PC. Worth looking out for as a feature on any future wall-mounted TV purchases.
September 18, 2018 at 8:52 am #26037I agree with ED, the Samsung extension connections box is a great idea and bests all the neck craning of try to use the sockets on the back of a wall mounted unit. However in Bob’s case it is not really relevant as he already has the TV.
If the TV has a USB socket it appears that the ION should plug right into that since the ION units I checked out do have a built in pre-amplifier to drive the USB link. My Samsung USB sockets are labelled 1 amp and 0.5 amp, The 1 amp should drive a suitable USB hard drive, though it might power such as the ION unit. I assume the 0.5 amp one is suitable for the likes of an ION unit if it draws its own mains power. My Humax and Bluray just used HDMI sockets on the attachment box (along with a Wii, that works but is now never used).
As for your treatment Bob, that appears to be progressing well without too many ups and downs apart from accumulating tiredness. I guess you are on a long chemo programme? To be honest I have rather lost track, managing my wife’s programme is proving challenging enough. Have you had any nerve damage? That can be a side effect of some, ‘Induced Peripheral Neuropathy after Cancer Treatment’. My wife has it quite badly in her feet (not made any better by other conditions), it is also affecting her sense of taste and her endocrine system/hormone balance as well. This was after the initial accelerated intensive chemo in the first 8 weeks. She was told it could take many months to recover from the neuropathy which will continue to make walking painful, still she gets to ring the bell tomorrow then starts a few weeks off before the knife man calls. She is struggling to accept the impact that will have with a week or more post op stay in hospital after a long operation involving at least three sites and two different teams. Recuperation will take a couple of months, it will not be fun all round.
So far your activity has amazed me and I admire the way that you just keep bashing on at full power, long may that last.
September 18, 2018 at 9:23 pm #26064Thanks for the good wishes and encouragement guys, much appreciated. Richard, I already have nerve damage thanks to an old injury which became worse and led to a spinal repair of C4 in 2005. Left side is mostly affected, some nerves damaged/no functional after tiny broken pieces cut the sheaths. Apparently the tiny pieces are like small scalpels. However, the damage has become worse over the last few weeks. I put this down to chemo and/or medication, but your words about side effects have induced me to ask further questions next week. Thank you for that, Richard.
I just cannot help the way I have always lived my life: I have to be engaged in some sort of activity most of the time. The downside is fatigue and weakness, the upside is that I am deeply asleep about 5 seconds after my head hits the pillow. I have to bash on, it is moving forward that keeps me going. Well, assisted by a SWMBO taskmistress! ???
Today I enlisted my loyal and helpful Buddy, No.2 gson, in order to erect and fit the new TV stand from Wayfair. (via China of course) The stand was a nightmare to build, with pictures to show “howto”. Unfortunately there were no written instructions and it was initially unclear that the build needed to start from upside-down. There were long threaded bars holding it all together, with the most ridiculously difficult fixing to each shelf of 3: a square block had to be maneuvered into a round hole, to accept a square peg above. We started again and managed to triumph, set up TV and waited for Her Maj to give a verdict: “The bottom shelf is upside down.” I refused to redo the job. Atmosphere became icy, gson ate lunch and retreated home. Wise lad!
BL, the ION is an old deck I have had for some years and never really used. It was a gift from a customer of my old design & print business. It can record direct from a PC, comes with an internal pre amp, which has given me another idea: I have an 11″ Eee PC that was my gdaughter’s, which has Windows 7 Basic. It has a small SSD but I could use it to record my masses of vinyl, then store the results on my NAS and external HDD. I may be able to upgrade the Basic to 7 Home premium. Can’t get to it atm, but I know it was media-centric, as that is why gd bought it.
Ed, I am in the same position of all the seemingly endless ‘small’ tasks that have to be done after redecoration, complicated by similar room layout changes, as
requesteddemanded by my lovely wife.I now have connection plan clear in my head. As there 2 components with optical input, I will choose TV to soundbar. The other optical port is on the Humax and I have bought a 2-way switch:
That will connect TV to soundbar and Humax STB. Done.
