I have looked this up many times but there are so many conflicting verdicts.

I usually buy my Christmas joints last minute after I have already spent a fortune for Christmas leaving me little beer token’s.

This time I have been buying a joint or two and putting it in the freezer for chrimbo every time I go to the supermarket for the past two months. Granted, frozen meat is never going to be as good as never frozen but I do a killer gravy so that more than makes up for it.

Before I looked on the net I have always been under the impression meat frozen well before use by date is good for 9 to 12 months.

So what’s your thoughts. I am @ 15 joints and counting, more than I need but hey oh. Oh, and I have a mix. Pork, beef, turkey & lamb. I usually do 2 or 3 meats on Christmas day. It’s enough for the cats to have a good Christmas dinner to.

I will leave the chicken to the last minute though, I am funny about chicken.

Frozen meat can be just as good. We often buy a larger beef joint that’s on offer and cut it up and freeze it to eat several months later.

Pork and whole chicken being relatively cheap we’ll buy as we need it, but there’s always a bag of frozen chicken breasts in the freezer.

Some years ago, my uncle who does NOT like frozen meat complimented me on the leg of lag he had just consumed. It’d been in our freezer for 3 years.

@dwynnehugh leg of Lag? I am guessing that is meant to say lamb.

As long as it’s properly wrapped, ie vacuum packed or sealed so that the air can’t reach it – then as many years as you like. Doesn’t work with fish & the meat must be used if defrosted. We used to buy a lamb or half a pig which the butcher would cut up into suitable joints, wrap & mark them & we could still be using them up some years later.

Although tinned, I’m sure I read that they found a stash of Scott’s stores that were still in perfect condition.

The one note of caution is that you need to check the temperature of your freezer. The USDA (normally paranoid on health) repeats the general assertions that have been made. However note that their indefinite storage comment is based on 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18C). If your freezer is at -10C then storage times are generally halved. Can be even worse if SWMBO is in the habit of regularly defrosting the freezer (may be time to buy a new one!).

Actually, he might have developed a taste for lag – he did have easy access to the odd prison or two!!

Ok you lot – there’s nothing tastier than a spit roasted old lag with mint sauce!!

and whilst you lot are being pedantic on my rather sheepish faux pas with the keyboard what about this:

” …. However note that their indefinite storage comment is based on 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18C). If your freezer is at -10C then storage times are generally halved….”

Is half of indefinite – still half of indefinite??   ?????????????????

I wouldn’t worry Lee, as others has said. A long time. The official advice is 6 to nine months. But I know we have had longer. Took us two years to eat a duck once.

And wee cook a lot of meals (stews/soups/curries), portion it in to single servings, for easy microwaveable meals. Are freezer is full of ‘surprises’ as they often don’t get labeled.

As someone mentioned above, if you defrost your freezer, or elect coupes off for more than a few Hours, youll have a lot to eat.

To be honest I am not sure how cold the freezer is but If I was to take a swing at a burglar with the ? turkey leg I would no doubt be done for man slaughter with an offensive weapon ? . Never had turkey before, never fancied it but thought I would give it a go this year. Damn big legs they have and Cheap from Morrison’s. Maybe they will go up in price nearer to the time.

Must admit, looking forward to chrimbo this year, no foreseen disasters this year ?. I will be making sure all cooking appliances are working beforehand.

Last year we ordered a 20lb turkey from Bolster Moor Farm near Huddersfield, not the cheapest by far – fresh but I asked for it to be frozen to get back to Anglesey.

It was amongst the best turkey I’ve had – no injected or extra water at all and delicious meat. £70 I know but WELL worth it. Had a load of their sausages etc as well – if I have to collect a turkey might as well stock up too. Need to order this years tomorrow.

I’m not buying any meat for christmas until I see what I’ve won in the legion draw, it’s done the 17th of Dec this year.

Even if I don’t win any meat vouchers there’s always battering to be done over spirits and meat vouchers.

Lee, turkey is way better than chicken IMO. More flavour and usually cheaper (bar christmas time)

I’m not a fan of turkey or chicken. For xmas we have beef and pork. I’m not really a fan of pork tbh.

As long as there are pigs in blankets I’m happy. Usually come Xmas lunch I’m hammered, it’s a tradition, so I’d pretty much eat anything tbh.
