So, when are we going to have a natter about ryzen>?

Having had a rather serious LTT binge I’m now considering building a semi decent big rig and with ryzen on the horyzen I’m thinking i might put it off a bit.

      😀

Given AMDs track record of crying wolf I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Early adoption also means you pay a premium.

well i’ve got the bug for some pc tinkering, even as far as considering scraping eBay for 775 CPUs and building what would have been a dream machine circa 2017.

Plus the googles seem to suggest that Ryzen may start to push a few intel prices south. but as always il wait and see, and forever be building that elusive wait tech machine. Unless i finally follow your advice and just build a decent cheap rig that does 95% of the work for 50% of the cost.

            A 2017 dream machine?  😉

That’s basically what I’ve been doing by accident with my bloody server. I’ve got most of the parts ready for a decent build now though, I just need to pull my finger out and start building

              whoops i mean circa 2007

i do like the idea of building a server, i smash big numbers everyday at work but i much prefer the times when all the networks break or i’m forced to find a work around or something like that. the numbers don’t seem to light the fire that the machines that do the numbers do.

I think I’m in need of an upgrade. My 965 x4 is still very serviceable, but I have to admit to being intrigued by Ryzen. Having said that, I’ll be sitting back and waiting for the early adopters verdicts before I splash out.

Since whether I go for AMD or Intel will pretty much need a complete rebuild, I need to be sure I make the right choice.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

You’ll be amazed whichever way you go.

I still have x3 and x4 PCs about as they are still usable, especially with an SSD.

But even a £50 Pentium dual core blows them away in every day tasks.

An i5 rips them to shreds for multi threaded jobs. You’ll really notice the difference when rendering.
