Sad to hear the news about the Queen, but when her poor health was announced by the Speaker earlier today in Parliament, it was not an unexpected outcome.
The Queen is dead, Long Live the King.
Not Politics per se, but couldn’t find a relevant Forum for this.
September 8, 2022 at 8:04 pm #69934Hopefully Charlie will start the process of downsizing the family hangers-on.
Personally I dislike the monarchy but it’s never a good thing for the family when someone dies.
September 8, 2022 at 8:10 pm #69935I’m a Republican, but I’m sad that she did not make her century. She tried hard to show that the monarchy still had some relevance in the modern world. While I do not think she succeeded, at least she wasn’t guilty of always putting her foot in her mouth unlike her husband and sons.
Its the end of an era, but I hope that the usual period of Royal Mourning does not interfere with the urgent problems that Truss & Co need to address..

September 9, 2022 at 12:17 pm #69940Thank heavens ‘mourning’ has not thrown the country into limbo the way I recollect happened when George VI died. The official Mourning arrangements look both pragmatic and well thought out. link
It looks like the Golf and Cricket organizers had not seen the guidance, and I guess we will soon find out if the FA is in the same boat. Given the high percentage of non-Royalists it would probably be a better mark of respect to call for a one+ minute period of silence before the start of any football matches.
The following is the official guidance for entertainment and sporting fixtures:
“There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National Mourning period. This is at the discretion of individual organisations.
As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral. They are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations.”
September 10, 2022 at 9:10 am #69942I was wrong, despite the plans the Queen had agreed before her death, the country now goes into 10 days of limbo at a time when we can ill afford the luxury of a Parliamentary and Bank of England holiday. What a mess. not what she would have wanted I’m sure.
