hey guys how are we?  thinking of buying a new ssd an maybe install win 10.( yes im still on 7 :yahoo:  ) the ssd I’m using at the mo has again jumped from 30 0dd gb  used to nearly 60gb for no apparent reason? the last time it done this something ( cant remember the prog my lad installed)  had some sort of nastiness that caused it. I’m now of the opinion I’m due a upgrade as my current ssd must be 4-5 years old  so rather than fiddle about ( no patience or time anymore)  just going to back  up what I want from it and and renew. was wondering if any of you have any recommendations  please?

hey thanks for the effort guys unbelievable gesture to setup and run a website like this truly remarkable. :good:

Try giving it a good clean up with CCleaner (don’t forget to clean up the system files too – an advanced option iirc). You may have been hit with M$’s latest update policy and have loads of unwanted old updates and other junk.

          Windirstat? https://windirstat.net/

It’s good at showing a visual representation of where the space is being used. I agree with Ed, odds on it’s updates and restore points.

Microsoft still offer a free upgrade to 10  if you use “assistive technologies” http://tinyurl.com/h5evwfp

The definition of assistive technologies is so woolly if you use a different mouse or keyboard or even sometimes zoom the screen you count.

In any case I’ve been buying a W10 Pro licences for less than a tenner and Office 2016 Pro for £15 from E-Bay with no issues.

            As above.

Turning off hibernation (as long as you don’t use it) will free up some space.

There are other things that can be done.

            How big is your drive?

An up to date W7 install weighs in at around 32GB.

If you are using twice that, try the above. Check for installed games and the like in control panel.

The windirstat will show file sizes. A folder tucked away with a rip of four DVDs could occupy all that space.

As long as there are no nasties, a half full SSD is nowt to panic over.

If you have a series 1 ocz ssd it will be fine, the bad ones was the series/gen 2or3, that gave alot of issues . My gen 1 30gb ssd now lives iny lads pc as a scratch disk, he is constantly recording live gameplay footage to it. By far the best way to kill a ssd, and it’s still going strong, getting more use than ever did, at 10 years old.

The 2nd or 3rd gen is what killed ocz.

30gb is only a couple of hours of captured  gameplay at 1080p 30fps

c:/User/isdarit/app data/local/temp has a lot of waste over time and c/windows/Temp

Agreed John, but the safest way to clean it is via CCleaner.

Ed perhaps I should use CCleaner.

Why not just use Windows disk manager, hit clean disk, then tick all the boxes then press go.

I bet it will clean out a good ⅓ of the disk

Yes, make sure you tick the Clean System Files button.

Myself I use the short cut, Disk Cleanup to Windows disk manager, clean disk.

Clean Disk / Disk Cleanup doesn’t clean c:/User/John/app data/local/temp, (even with all boxes ticked)

CCleaner doesn’t clean c:/User/John/app data/local/temp, either, that’s the free version not sure about paid versions, no point paying $19 for something that can be done manually.

It does John, but you have to use the Advanced Tab and if necessary change accounts and rerun CCleaner for each account. This link walks you gently through all the steps. The link also explains the main difference with the paid-up version (it only cleans the system and logged on user files, which to me is a good safety measure).

I recommend using CCleaner as it is very safe (provided you use it to do a registry backup first). The issue with manual cleanups is that you are treading in areas where the dragons live, and it is pretty easy to stuff up your system especially if you mess with the registry.

Ccleaner>Options>Include. From there you can add custom files and/or folders to clean with various options

Ed In the advanced I un ticked only delete files in Windows older than 24hrs

That seemed to do the trick and it cleaned local Temp.

Steve I spotted that, further investigation needed.

It’s cleaning some things I don’t want cleaned.
