My lovely, 24 yo granddaughter wrote this poem for my birthday today. As you can imagine, I filled up. She is a special, caring young lady who understands what is happening to me.
GRANDAD
My grandad is my hero, and my inspiration to carry on.
The light he gives to others, means he has always shone
He is my biggest critic and my biggest support
And for my happiness, he has always fought.
He’s always had a listening ear and never turned me away
Even when I didn’t like what he had to say.
That’s the thing about unconditional love, it will never falter
Even when the world is upside down, his love will never alter.
He makes me want to be a better person, the best version of me.
I am who I am today because he taught me drive and ambition is key
I hope I’ve made him proud of the person I’ve become and the choices that I’ve made
My grandad is my hero and my love for him will never fade.
I want those words read out at my funeral. I never wanted to be famous or filthy rich, but those words and the family’s cards today, mean more than either of those things.
