By that I mean a TV set from 70’s or Early 80’s, fake brown wood, little round knobs on the front etc…

My first console gaming was done on a set like that, Grundig IIRC, slide out drawer to tune the channels. I think the console was a Grandstand thing.

Thinking back actually first experience was on a machine with two sort of joy sticks with round knobs on and a tennis ball “white dot” on the screen with a line down the middle. No idea what it was called.

Sounds like pong on the Atari 2600. Maybe.

It was the first version of pong, not on a 2600.

                      We had one.

An update to this thread. I managed to get hold of some old portable 5″ tv’s one of which you can see in the pic and the other is black and white older version. I have the black and white one at the side of my pc. It’s hooked up to a freeview box via the converter I bought of ebay and works realy well 🙂

Just before Xmas I skipped a hand held black and white, probably 6″ square portable. If id of known then you wad into this stuff I’d of sent it you.

Nuts of sated from the mid 80s.and probably been in out loft since then judging by the dust and dirt on its origanal box.

Gut it, and put in a Pi Zero plus a 5 inch HDMI monitor (about £40  total) — instant modern Internet TV!

If you can get it working to your satisfaction — fine. However for those bits of kit that would otherwise get trashed the Pi route may be a way to make a couple of bob.

It does work fine, I would not break up anything that was working or could be fixed. I would rather “And have thought about” building something to look vintage with modern insides. A vintage wood cased TV is something I have mulled over if I could devise a way of get something to go over an LCD monitor to replicate a vintage TV screen, maybe some how cutting the front of a glass screen if at all possible.

I’d ha e to imagine Lee there is some plug in /filter for vlc or the like that mimics an old style tv. After all instagram was made huge by putting old style filters on photos, it also helped that in the early days of iPhone the photos wasn’t great, so a filter that made it look old actually enhanced  the picture quality. Shame it took so long to migrate to android as alot of their cameras are still crap today.

I use to love that my old HTC Desire used to turn off (to standby) black, by mimicing how old sets went off, which the white like in the uk centre, that then moves in to a single center point (pixel).

I can’t recall now if it was a stock htc sense feature or an early CM mod feature. But not the less I liked the retro nod.

But I recon you’d have better look with a software filter solution than a physical one.

Instead of a pie zero I’d stick a pi3 in it, as then you’d have a quite capable retro looking  Linux machine inside the TV.

Man I wish I didn’t bin that old hand held TV now. I’d of used a pi zero W on that (didn’t exist then), as that will run off a battery bank and there would of been loads of space for a large battery.

How are you getting a picture to that old TV Lee? Isn’t analogue transmission turned off now? And how do you get a digital signal in it?

So do you plug a digital box on to the cart end and it pumps the signal out over coax?

What are the channels on it for, 21-6x? What do they do?

The roof aerial goes into the free-view box, then a Scart from the box to the converter and then coax to the TV. TV’s after a certain age had 6o odd channels and you can set what channel you want to use on the converter.
