12 yo gdaughter is to be 13 on 15 July and whole family is buying her a desktop gaming machine as a birthday surprise, put together, selected and ordered by big brother IT engineer from work. The massive box was delivered here and is on the spare bed that she occupies during weekend sleepovers. It was glaring at me from the bed, so I covered it up. I have no idea what the components add up to, but am taking gson for a meal this week and will ask him. Knowing him, he will have used his ‘Right Hand Man’ work position to blag a very good deal. It has been illuminating watching brother suddenly realise that little sister is no longer annoying, but can talk gaming and computing with him, soon to be on same level. She is very, very bright and heading for A and A* grades, according to all tutors. (They have different dads, but he gets on well with sister’s dad) Mum is a Teacher.

We do not have a very good pair of headphones for her: the ones she has have been used on various laptops, phones and tablets since she was maybe 4 or 5. We are looking for gaming headphones, but do not want to spend the money that Gson would recommend: his ‘phones are fantastic pieces of Razer kit and very expensive. All his peripherals are Razer, he loves their gear but has the income to afford it.

Question for the Forum expert gamers: what would be the best ‘phones for our gdaughter, bearing in mind that she will need to be future-proofed as much as possible? Ignore budget requirements for now, just please give recommendations based upon experience, if you will.

      Thanks guys.

Bose QC35ii are very good indeed but not cheap.

If you want good but not break The bank, look at Audio Technica cans. I’d get her the entry level cans with no mic, and one of miles below. She could have a special audio set up, for about £100.

Or if you just want something that isn’t terrible, look at the mid range Turtle beach stiff. I say mid on them as their entry level skimp in the mic.

        Ars

I’d recommend Bluetooth ones either way, as there is nothing like jumping up to answer the door etc… And your headphone wire taking the contents of your desk with you! Done that a few times.

If she is going to game properly, online with mates regular, save her friends ears and buy a £50 mic. Either the mason metior (not metiroite that way is a cheap version of an already inexpensive mic) or the yeti snowball.

Both great mics. Both USB, I have the Metior in black,, but know the snowball is as least as good as that.

The bose QC35ii are brilliant. Noise cancellation like nothing I’ve heard before. And lots of sounds I never knew was in songs ect. Both BT and a wire if you prefer, that unpugs from the headset, so if you break the cable, its a £3 fix. Battery life is 20 hours (off an hour charge) with mouse cancellation on high. You have off med and high.

Ifvtou do go that route, but doubt it unless she really looks after her stuff, and needs top quality sound, but if you do, buy black, not silver. The mic is good and they have Google assistant built in, and you can mute the other person, quickly to google fact check, and should like she know All kinds of random shit lol.

I’ve gone through many headphones over the last two decades and one thing I’ll never buy again is a gaming headset. They ranged from terrible to not so good for the more expensive ones. Most are okay for gaming alone but terrible if you want to listen to some music on YT or watch a movie. I had a couple the cheaper AudioTechnica headphones and they have good sound for the price but wouldn’t recommend them for a long time use – a bit too hard around the ears and the faux leather didn’t last plus I think one side stopped working on one of them. I’m now using Beyerdynamic and they are much more comfortable for my ears, sound is good and nothing’s gone wrong or broke yet.

Thanks Steve, great advice to check out. Had not thought of Bluetooth or headset: she is a cable chewer and I had to put spiral wrap around her last headphones. I like the Bluetooth headset you write about, that will solve her cable chewing and will help keep online with mates. Maybe that low voltage she got chewing through last tear’s headphone has electrified her brain, she has come on so much since starting Grammar school at 11! ?

Thanks Tadka, that puts me off Gaming ‘phones, good advice. I have an old set of Sony ‘phones and the ear muff material is beginning to flake away, but they still work perfectly even after being dropped to the floor so many times. I eventually hooked then onto my desk with a 2-elastic band and tie wrap arrangement, to a Command Strip hook. “Bodgified”* solution, keeps them off the floor.

*Old engineer’s term, I last used in my old workshop – example: “Bob, this xxxxx does not fit the XXXXXX.”

Me, taking a look: “Bodgify it, not difficult. Take the xxxxx and measure it carefully, see if a yyyyy screwed/bolted/welded/brazed/glued to a ZZZZZZ will work, get on with it lad.”

Well, I am an old engineer. We don’t die, we just fade away to be Bodgified in another body. That one is usually Pre-Bodged.

A bit of a side note, but if you want some half decent but cheap Earphones for kids, that they won’t think are in cool are the cheap £15 Sony jobbies.

I got my kids all these, they are OK, when I broke my shennhiser (sub 100 ones so nothing special ) I used one of the kids pair of sonys for a while and found them perfectly fine. Not a patch on my current bose set, but that’s hardy a fair comparison.

Maybe somthing like them and a samson metior or yeti snowball would make a great starter gamer/ youtuber set up. For about £50 all in. Would blow any gaming set out The water. I doubt you could get a gaming set up with the same mic quality for 6x the price.

It’s a shame no matter how good your cans are, you’ll still hear the shitty quality of your gaming friends mic. If I had a mate I gmaed with often enough, I’d send them a decent mic, just so I dint have to listen to the crappy sound of gaining sets.

And for £15, it doesn’t really matter if she breaks 3 pairs a year. But they are wired, but hey, they are 15 quid, and look decent if she is on a face cam. Names matter with kids. Brand often trumps quality everyone. Hence beats. Which was just re branded crap for about the first 5 years. They was literally about a £20 set of cans sold for £200 to 300 a pop.

My bose cans are brilliant, but like most crap I buy, I couldn’t recommend to others. I’m clever enough to know the stuff isn’t worth the cost, but dumb enough to still want to always try the stuff out. I suppose the bose set is worth it if you want a really good set of noise cancellation cans, that offer good Bluetooth sound. And want Google assistance built in. It’s a very niche audience. I couldn’t recommend them to 99.9% of the people I know. They are very comply too, like little pillows. Big enough to not to catch your ears. I think proper leather too, but it’s hard to tell these days. Smell leathery.

Those are my ‘phones Steve! Had them about 7 years or so I think now, still work perfectly, apart from the shiny black stuff coming away from the ear muffs. (does not transfer to what is left of my hair, still silver Lol.)

Going to look at headsets, she has a pair of same Sony’s for her phone, newer than mine but exactly the same. If it works, why bring out something else? Just increase the price every year or so, her phone were about £3 dearer than mine. I have her original generic ones in a drawer, chewed cable and bare wires!

Thanks for the advice mate, I ‘ll find something in there to suit.

Cheers. Hope the car situation is OK.

And lots of sounds I never knew was in songs ect.

We’ve just found out how tinny the Honor 9 speakers are. We haven’t really used them properly for music yet, so everything’s just been played through the speakers. Alice was upset in the car, and it’s got the funky new Bluetooth setup. I played Baby Shark, and all of a sudden it was like being in a nightclub, with never before heard bass lines, and random unheard parts of the song ?

P.S. Baby Shark for those who haven’t had the pleasure yet ?

Lol my youngest is ten so I’m over them days. Though I’m guessing you’ll want them tinny phone speakers back soon.

What you need is to buy a hand full of cheap £3 kids over head cans. Especially for the car. If she doesn’t take to them at least you can drown out the crappy kids shows.

My kids  are well trained. They can choose the station as much as they like when they pay for their own car. Untill then they  have the choice of one listening to talk sport or 2, use their phone with ear phones. (only Earphones no phone speakers) .

Though as a courteous to my passangers if I’m listing to a book or podcast, I’ll put the Earphones in, and let them choose radio station. Bit that’s only on over 30min rides usually.

You have to lay these rules down early. Especially with little girls, as they are truly little monsters that will forever be trying to manipulate you.

Lol love her really, but I see what them women are about. I think they all hold secret classes on how to get away with crap. I’m sure the old period mood thing is somthing mother pass on to daughters at age 12.

I can imagine it now: “sit down love, I have a secret for you, the most power secret, a secret that only us women know about. for a millenia women folk have a way of getting away with murder for 1 week out of evey 4………..”

You’re definitely right. She’s not three yet, and has already figured out the fake crying. Doesn’t like it when I do it back though, I get a little laugh and called Silly Daddy 😀

Thanks for that, you’ve just reminded me that I need to make a thread. I’ve got an old tablet and holder etc. with headphones, but it’s too old to install a decent media player from the Play Store.
