If you thought that the ‘Turkey’ saga was over, it looks like you were wrong, the F-35 Joint Program Office is busy papering over the cracks and flaws.
October 14, 2018 at 3:05 pm #27168I should change the headline to “Grounded Turkey” as all F35 Turkeys have just been plucked.
March 8, 2019 at 12:04 pm #31430Who needs a Flying Turkey or expensive fighter pilots!
The Yanks just flight-tested their stealth fighter drone XQ-58A, at an estimated $2-3 million per plane (roughly ten of them for the price of a Turkey and half the size) we could have saved a lot of money and modified a container ship to launch them – so saving a White Efflump cost as well. Though with an operational range of 2000 miles who needs a slow old boat except to carry the crates!
March 8, 2019 at 2:25 pm #31432Correction – the F35C (our Turkey) is projected to cost $107.7 mullion each – i.e about 40 drones per Flying Turkey!
The latest update on this massive cock-up can be read in Foxtrot Alpha.
March 30, 2019 at 4:13 pm #32262Its always bad news day for the Flying Turkey. The Project on (US)Government Oversight (POGO) has just issued a report on the security of the Turkey’s highly integrated software that enables the plane to fly and (according to its design specs) to be a potent fighter/fighter bomber.
Unfortunately if you read the POGO report, the plane’s software security has more holes than a sieve.
“As in previous years, cybersecurity testing shows that many previously confirmed F-35 vulnerabilities have not been fixed, meaning that enemy hackers could potentially shut down the ALIS network, steal secret data from the network and onboard computers, and perhaps prevent the F-35 from flying or from accomplishing its missions.”
It was reported in El Reg that “Testers could take control of weapons with “relatively simple tools and techniques.” In fact POGO reports that many items of software still use the manufacturers default password!
The simple measure of what percentage of aircraft could in theory be combat ready is a mere 26%! The figure for Britain’s Lightning is half that number!
All in all the readiness of this excuse for a plane is so bad that a Chris Grayling clone must of played a key role in its procurement!
April 6, 2019 at 2:35 pm #32437The planes we should have bought at a quarter of the price of a Turkey, just gave a civilian passenger the thrill of his lifetime when his American ejector seat emulated the Turkey and apparently misfired! link
April 6, 2019 at 10:29 pm #32443His ejector seat was British the Rafale is fitted with Martin-Baker ejector seats. An older version of which was responsible for the death of a Red Arrows pilot ☹
April 7, 2019 at 1:16 am #32444Im sorry, but I don’t care if its US made or UK. How many civies get to say they ejected firm an F-xx he will dine out on that for life.

Steve – he’s 64 and if he was a cat the events of that day probably took at least 6 of his lives!!! He’d better start out on the apres dinner circuit pdq or they’ll be writing that story as an obit!!???
April 7, 2019 at 8:28 am #32446I was mostly joking. But still a cool story to tell. Over heard ejecting f-up alot of people’s backs, so sivem I already have 4 disks blown, I don’t think I’d enjoy that ride.
I still think a cool story to tell, non the less. There can only be a handful of non military people to ever of done that ever.
April 7, 2019 at 8:39 am #32447Me too!!??
The missus suffers with a disc that came out then shrivelled after being mis-diagnosed as arthritis and left for 5 years, so I know what you mean. Her sister is just about to go in for surgery on three herniated discs and severe spinal stenosis – doesn’t get a break, that one.?
April 7, 2019 at 1:33 pm #32460Two jumps ending in bad landings are probably responsible for some of my spinal problems, exacerbated by an industrial injury and Ricketts in early life. I wore leg irons and big boots for my first years, as did my elder brother, who was determined that I should get over it as he did. He got me on a bike and on roller skates, which got my legs working after several painful falls. He and my dad are responsible for me becoming a runner eventually, they pushed and pushed me. I bless their memory, they gave me the ability to have a great life and perform physically far better than I might have done. Although I was often in tears of despair at all their efforts!
What I have experienced, can never be taken away, as long as my memories last.

I'm out.August 3, 2019 at 3:40 pm #35425When you read this, you really have to wonder why the MOD ever purchased this heap of junk!
August 3, 2019 at 7:16 pm #35428Very naughty indeed. But not unsurprising.
August 13, 2019 at 11:11 am #35587Coming up on Tuesday next week, on ITV, a documentary with cameras following pilots being trained to fly the F35 Lightning in Wales and America.
Should be interesting as to whether they recognise/admit to its’ shortcomings or go off on a promotional blurb about how wonderful it is!!
August 13, 2019 at 12:37 pm #35590The MOD will tightly control all the media content as they must never let the public realise what a bunch of incompetents they are!
November 1, 2019 at 7:58 pm #37931Saved by the Election!
Luckily the Secretary of State for Defence does not have to stand up in front of Parliament and explain why he purchased 200 American ARSEs for his Flying Turkeys
Hard to believe that someone was stupid enough to coin the acronym, but true – Link

I watched this in one of the episodes one the British pilots missed his bombing run as the turkey wouldn’t work. It took if I remember rightly an hour to reboot its systems by which time he had missed his slot on the bombing range
January 17, 2020 at 2:34 pm #39827The Flying Turkey is a bit like Boeing – all news is bad, some terrible. link
The US is dumping the built-in maintenance system that comes with the ‘Turkey’ as a total waste of space. They are replacing it with a different software package (yet more cost).
Unfortunately thanks to our MOD’s inability to write contracts with swingeing penalty clauses, the UK will just have to soldier on with an unworkable system that almost guarantees that 30%-70% of our aircraft will be unusable. A bunch of people should be dismissed with prejudice and stripped of their honours, but we all know they will just walk away with their fat pensions and retirement jobs with Lockheed etc.
January 17, 2020 at 6:02 pm #39830Couldn’t they replace it with a custom SAP’s module ? Come to think of it, if they did it probably wouldn’t work either 😂
