I am curious to what people think of this new wonder Link. I caught the add on TV but I am not sure of the in’s and out’s. Sounds a bit like snake oil to me but who know’s.

Its just an off-line scan with the addition of a couple of extra A/V scans.. If you want this most A/V manufacturers offer a free off-line scan download. Even M$ does! link

Imo it is better (but less convenient) than a regular A/V package as many rootkits and malware have ways of avoiding/subverting on-line scans.

It was the smart alec US accents that turned me off.

I remake a usb stick and upgrade it for myself every month, with 5 different Malware, Adware, Rootkit and AV scanners. Not had to use it for a long time, but I keep it upgraded and updated, for the few friends who occasionally screw up their systems. It’s easy to use it and show them what they did wrong: I don’t do anything but kill the nasties and advise them what to do next themselves. Bitter experience has taught me not to go further. Have not been asked for some time now, thankfully.

If an OSSS* like myself can make a stick like that, anyone with a little knowledge can.

It’s just some bloke packaging freely available stuff under a brand and making it ‘easy’ for people to use.

I really wonder what the support is like, how many recent machines will ignore it due to UEFI/BIOS settings? I’m guessing a lot. Trying to talk someone through UEFI settings when they have no clue could really mess things up.

PM they should be able to set up a ‘magic’ boot stick with uefi support fairly easily. AFAIK all recovery sticks for A/Vs or backup programs now seem to manage this painlessly.

I do however take your point on support there are some people who seem to have the gift of being able to break any system no matter how easy the supplier thinks that it is. I also agree that this is just a packaging of freebies. I tried to say that, but did not do it as succinctly as you.

Which are the preferred ones you have on the stick ?

There are only 4, forgot that I ditched one:

KVRT (Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool), Malwarebytes, Adware Cleaner, Hitman Pro.

Not all necessarily used on every occasion.

                      Thanks Bob

I didn’t realise that Hitman Pro was a Sophos product since December 2015 or that the latest version uses Bitdefender and Kaspersky Lab as “in-cloud technology partners”

Anyone else running the new free Acronis Ransomware Protection ?

                        Details

I’ve had it on a test PC for 6 weeks now – I assume it is working ?

Sorry but no. I gave up on Acronis as I found it was giving me too many VM shadow copy issues. It used to be OK until it went all ‘cloudy’.

I think it sounds like a good idea, if a bit expensive. Obviously pointless for people like us, who know what we’re doing, but for someone like my mother it would be ideal.

If I knew how to automate it, I’d make one for her myself.
