My prediction is 3 -1 to Germany. If we’re lucky ?
Americans: Over Sexed, Over Payed and Over here, Wat Wat!
November 10, 2017 at 12:52 pm #13384My usual default stance on England is “what’s the point”, but in this, and Brazils case “really, what’s the point”.
I won’t be watching, but maybe, just maybe, we may find a gem amongst our second string players.
Doubtful.
November 10, 2017 at 6:49 pm #13389There is a German word which applies to the worst of England fans when we play the Germans: “schadenfreude” Closest meaning is ‘Evil joy’ or, more aptly, ‘malicious joy’. German players are unfailingly gracious when they beat us, but on the rare occasions when we win, usually in friendlies or a rare Qualfier win, the anti-German hysteria among some England supporters is sickening. They fail to remember the dismal record we have against Germany in tournaments, after that wonderful win in 1966:
1982: World Cup qualifier – England 1 – west Gernay 2. West Germany were beaten by Italy in the finals.
1985: some meaningless tournament called the City Tournament. England 3 – 0 Germany.
1990: World Cup: West Germany 1 – 1 England. No prizes for guessing which of those two beat Argentina in the Final.
1996: Euros: football came home ? another 1 – 1 draw, against a unified Germany, who won the Final.
2000, June: Euros: a rare tournament win. England 1 – 0 Germany. France won the Final.
Followed in October by –
2000: World Cup Qualifiers: England 0 – Germany 1
2001: Germany’s biggest off day, World Cup: Germany 1 – England 5. I was going berserk in my living room.
2010: World Cup: Germany 4 – 1 England. Normal service is resumed.
In 2013, ’16 and ’17, we lost 3 successive friendlies.
It’s a pretty horrible record, is it not? The fans who turn up with blow-up Spitfires and anti-German chants, do not realise that the German fans do not understand the Spitfires and resent the chants. It makes us look an uncivilised bunch of hooligans and it’s why all our fans are watched carefully, all over the world. And jumped upon at the slightest excuse. Throwing bananas and racial slurs at foreign players, when half your own national team is composed of players with a different skin colour?- Das ist Die Englanders, mein kameraden. Ignoriere sie, Sie sind verrückt.

November 10, 2017 at 10:02 pm #13395The scratch team did very well I thought. Lots of attacking ideas, lots of possession and a good defence, could have scored at least two, Jessie Lingard missing a sitter in front of goal. Some of the ‘injured regulars’ ought to be looking over their shoulders. They more than matched the world champions.
Nice to see the Under 17’s presented with their trophy.

Talking of fans dressed up a WW2 fighters and singing bombing raid songs etc, everyone we play this is highlighted from both sets of fans. It’s done in jest.
As the years roll by and the press get more and more pr friendly, it is now reported as a bad thing, when just ten years ago (or shorter) it wad a good. Thing.
I was watching a show last week about football and it’s strange fans. Back in thd 70s West ham untied had a match program with two nazi clad wh fans singing. No club would put that in the program never mind make it front cover.
The panned on the show, all agreed it’s its Prince harrys fault. If he would never of done the nazi thing as fancy dress we’d still be ok.
I recall early in the year, just after the ajax coach bombing, that next next there was a load of football fans iirc Leicester, in Spain all dolled out in WW2 gear so fingers the songs, because of the ajax thing, the press decided to take nail Leicester, also they made trouble that night in Spain. (but I doubt it was the dressed up lol).
The hosts on talk sport was talking about pc going mad, as the German fans do the exact same, the dress as tommy pilots, and the get to get her with the English dressed as Jerry’s and have a great night. This has gone of for decades, and untill the last couple of years, hasn’t raised any eyebrows.
Ive got nothing against I was tbh, it’s funny, and comedy it’s ment to push boundaries.
I heist I grew up in the 80s and by then it wad all jokes about the war. Even the Xmas play at the local theatre had Stan boardman (he drinks in my local now with Dennis Taylor and Mike england), and all I remeber him for is goose stepping a shouting “z-germans r coming” oh and that stupid rubber chicken he still carries with him to this day.
One night in a pub with the man, is enough to make you want to strangle him. His comedy is lost on me. I’ll usually leave within an hour of him coming in, he is very load, and has to be the centre of attention.
November 11, 2017 at 12:15 pm #13408Got to agree about Stan Boardman, gives Liverpool a bad name “Dey bombed our chip shop!” I never heard a Scouser talk like that, and I knew a good few, even had a Liverpool GF once upon a time, lived there on a few Leave periods. One of my Army mates was a Brian Scully, great lad but he was a Blue Steve. Also hated the Harry Enfield ‘Scousers in the Pub’ shows.
I have a lot of German friends, still in regular contact with my best mate when over there. Rolf says that his generation does not mind the p*** taking from England fans, and give it back, but the latest generation are sick and tired of it. At least 3 generations since the War, they are beginning to ask, why do we have to continue to feel guilty about something that ended 50 years before we were born? I can understand that.
SWMBO and I were talking about this after the Rememberance Silence. We decided that the majority of Brits are the most xenophobic people in the world. (after most Americans!) You can see it on FB every day, some tinpot bunch with anti-foreign rants, supported and “liked” by loads of others. We also look back too much, to those days when most of the planet was pink on the maps. As a nation, we cannot face the fact that we are not what we were and we have to find another way. The problem is that we do not have any leaders to show us that way. I am as guilty as anyone else, in that I read a lot of history, especially British Armed Forces history.
