Edit button at the top of posts disappears after a few minutes.

April 24, 2017 at 5:50 am #6698That’s by design. You only have a short time to retract your statement :good:

April 24, 2017 at 2:18 pm #6713Yes, that’s common to a lot of forums and comments sections.

April 25, 2017 at 1:12 am #6747Gonna lead to lots of double posts then – especially from me.

April 25, 2017 at 8:50 am #6751It shouldnt as you have a decent window to fix posts.
I think if your adding info you should double post anyhow, as if you alter an origanal post, most people won’t see it, as they won’t know you have added, as they wont be notified. So if no one’s sees what you write, what’s the point of writing it?
So double posting is fine. Actually should be preferred.
Plus we haven’t seen an outbreak of DP and the edit setup had been in place a while.
Personally I hate it when people go back and edit or delete statements to fit their narrative. Even with the ability to mass edit and change post meaning I never did, even when I looked back and thought I shouldn’t of said that etc.
I hate noting more than seeing on sites, that people have altered what they said. It’s easy to spot as the replies at first don’t make sense. But you can spot that the poster had got embarrassed or changed their mind and altered it. Instead of having some stones, and simply saying “I was wrong sorry” further down.
15-30 mins is long enough for most people check their spelling etc. So it shouldn’t be an issue.
I say most as as a dyslexic, I cant see my mistakes when I proof them, as I read it how I think I wrote it and not as I wrote it. When I come back an hour later most of the mistakes jump out then, but not at first.
So if anyone should be annoyed about a short window, it should be the likes of me. But I’ll put my principles over personal embarrassment every time.
One thing I hated about mm, and not sure if it can be done here, is when someone opened a new thread, the deleted it after replies had been added. I think delete privilege should be revoked the second a reply is added.
April 25, 2017 at 10:58 am #6755I am really bad in needing to edit nearly everything I do. Partly for spelling/grammar, but also for flow. However I find the <30 minutes edit window to be fine. If I feel I need to add something new or something I forgot to mention I will always use [edit]. ….
I do not think the way the forum is set up runs into the sort of problem you cite Steve. Once someone has responded to your post the edit window is closed and you cannot go back and retract/alter the original post to ‘fix the facts’.
[edit] Just checked there is no way an Edit can be used to delete a post. So that too has been covered Steve.
April 25, 2017 at 11:37 am #6758I think I’ve seen a Delete before. I’ll give it a try by posting a “TEST” post in this topic and then see if I can delete it.
April 25, 2017 at 11:38 am #6759“TEST”
Well, as you can see it’s still here :yahoo: – even after pressing the Delete button, being asked ( by Forumite ) if I was sure, clicking OK and it disappearing from my list of posts!!
It looks like your principles/priorities are safe, Steve.??
Well I had to try!! B-)
April 25, 2017 at 11:42 am #6760I just wish I used my own advice; compose in a word processor of choice, check the readability and leave it for a few moments to mature.
Then copy and paste only when you are good and ready.
Definition of a dot matrix printer:
A slow noisy way of finding all the errors you made when composing a document. Errors always managed to highlight themselves on printed copy.
Exceptions to the above rule;
Put the work up on a website or send an e-mail, walk away for two minutes, return and read it through,. Not only you but half the world will know just how much you got it wrong.
In this context, ‘you’ and ‘I’ are effectively the same.

Completely agree, and this has all cropped up in another Topic. I said then that I always re-read my posts immediately after “Submit” so that I can correct any errors. Sometimes also, my fingers want to type something from my thinking that may upset someone else. Re-reading gives me a chance to think about what I have said and correct anything that may cause offence.
