you two at he back, eyes front and concentrate !
the first two chapters are just Linux Marketing, a waste of an hour.
Lee start at ch3 . the only thing you need to know from the first two is linux is big and used world wide (no shit) and they will be using Ubuntu 14.4 LTS for the course and the like gnome .
im going shopping now. then going to give ch3 a crack.
August 3, 2014 at 2:13 pm #365Moved now 🙂

August 3, 2014 at 6:55 pm #366i worked through 3 and 4, then decided i better get myself a bunto install so i can follow along properly, not that i wasnt impressed with the VMachine that was running on Amazons servers (very smappy).
getting my computer backed up and freed up took all afternoon, then for a second the bunto install borked the win7 intsall , but it fixed itself lol.
im not that impressed so far, even tho ive been away from linux (mint) for 3 plus years, the firt 4 chapters is very basic. hopeflly it wont stay that way, im sure it will get hard fast for me at-least. with you using it daily now it may be a while before it touches on new ground for you.
that brings me onto a question ive had for a while; what is with the tatal 360 from you. you would even entertain the word linux when we first started speaking, iirc i was running mint at the time. was it win8 that made you commite MS suicide lol.
i started a C++ programming course at EdeX last week, its much better than this linux one, however that one releases the lectures and tasks weekly.
August 3, 2014 at 7:28 pm #367ERmm, yea good and fair question. So no I have not switched side’s, I love 8 and it’s siblings, it’s smashing, i’m working on getting hold of threshold “9”. However to see linux on a server side of event’s is something else, amazing. And when you can earn money from that, then that’s even more amazing :yahoo:
I’ll be using mint for the course 😉

August 3, 2014 at 7:38 pm #368you can use anything for it. i dont think you going to get much out of it.
ive all given up on 8.1. i really preferred 8. bt i think im one of a very small few lol.
August 3, 2014 at 7:42 pm #369No i dont think i’ll get much out of it, Ive had to jump in the deep end the past 9 months and I am only after specifics.

August 3, 2014 at 7:49 pm #370that how i used mint, only for vm and folding. i basically installed it, and then followed tuts to get it up and running. and as mint never breaks once going i hardly had to touch it. linux is good like that. its when it breaks its a whole bucket of fun to fix.
August 3, 2014 at 7:52 pm #371Lol, mint breaks all the time. I am sick of reloading it every two minutes. Cant be much good for my ssd’s. :yahoo:

August 3, 2014 at 7:59 pm #372when i used it, it just worked. i use to have 4 instances running on vms on my i7 win7 64bit , it use to fold like there was no tomorrow my PPD was huge. that was the day when you could fold on win 64 cpu clients , only win 32bit .
so it made sence to run mint x4 clients and a one gpu client (or 2 if you had 2 gfx) from windows. it was a huge hack in the day. but was rock solid when set up. it actually broke when i was in france and i couldnt fix it remotely and i never bothered once i got home.
the bunto install was really nice everything worked, and it feels nice and fast. on it now.
August 3, 2014 at 8:03 pm #373a quick at the dates and i was running mint 6 Filicia. the numbers have shot up over the last few years .
August 11, 2014 at 9:18 pm #434Did you resist this course Lee? Or anyone else?
August 11, 2014 at 10:21 pm #435I have been a little short of time and backed upto to fook with work with no end in sight, but i will try and get it in some how. To be honest i am sick to death of looking at my computer, but needs be and all that. :negative:

August 11, 2014 at 11:03 pm #436Your not missing much, out of the 3 edx I’m doing, this Linux one is by far the worst. A real bad advertisement for edx.
If it was my first edx course I wouldn’t of tried another. Luckily it wasn’t and the Stamford and iit Bombay courses are decent.
I know the sick of pc feeling, usually end with a hangover :yahoo:
August 11, 2014 at 11:41 pm #437To be honest an edex course gives you nothing “I am guessing” that a google would not give you the answer to. Ans seriously any organization or job application that takes a program that can be done by any old loon is not going to hold any weight or may infact may make you look worse because you have to resort to it in the first place! As I have said to you multiple times sgb, learn by doing 🙂

August 12, 2014 at 1:16 am #438I agree, but the two edx course I’m currently working throigh are one from iit Bombay and one from Stamford, both the exact course that they run in the uni, they are recored live. And the thing they have that others don’t (at least not for free) is the course material, document and virtual software and space on the uni vms.
It’s identical set up from when I was at uni, very impressed. The Bombay corse(cs101) us very much old school uni, and very similar to my maths lectures was, a man talking at you for hours way above your head, they your left to figure it out. Which was hard. Even with the tool to play with.
The Stamford corse (CS50) even tho it is teaching you the same, take you in a great direction, longer lecture, but they want you ‘to do, break and fix’ my prepared method of learning, like you Lee.
That’s how I started on the Stamford as I was struggling on the Bombay course. I did need to find a YouTube video as I need help figuring code::block ide, but all is well.
Edx I the best free online learning experience outside of apples iTunes U, which is very good, offing the same courses almost. There are others for free, but like the course materials, for them there is usually a monthly fee.
BBack to the Linux course, it’s defo no uni module, and I think it may get a bit more advanced but so far it’s very lame. I watched an hour of lectures last night, the last I watched thought me how to connect to the wifi, and I think about half way though :negative:
BTW the course are c++. Week 3 drops tomorrow
September 3, 2014 at 5:30 pm #497I have just started the EDX course, as was said the first two chapters are a waste of time.
I am using Mint 17 MATE and can equate to it through the Ubuntu explanation, although there are several differences.
I have been using Linux on and off for about 12 years, so have seen a lot of changes.
I am doing this course for a refresh more than anything else, although I have picked up a couple of pointers and have just finished chapter 5.
September 3, 2014 at 5:46 pm #498I just have not had the time to bother with it what so ever.
