Ebay sale query

I sold a HDD on ebay, as far as I am aware I wiped it. The buyer sent me a message

I found some data on the disk, I save on to CD and forward it on.

Does a buyer know my address or is it a scam to get my add

Ask “What is the nature/type of data on the disk? How many GB of data? Can you Email it?”

That should be enough to find out if he is genuine. If he tells you what type of data it is, you might recognise it. Did you wipe the disk properly before you sent it John?

JB, when you sell something, you and the buyer get each other’s details (usually via Paypal), certainly the seller gets the buyers details.

But just do as Bob says, BUT USING EBAY messaging to reply to him. If he replies there, probably kosher, if not, just ignore it. (I assume it was not full of you and porn?  — If it was, more fool you!)

I’ve never had the seller’s details, only the Ebay emails. I don’t think I’ve ever been sent a way to communicate outside of Ebay.

Tippon, yes, you are probably right. I sell my three phase converter plans through Ebay, and I always collect the buyer’s name and email address from the Paypal notification. I then email the buyer extra stuff (FAQ etc) as noted in my listing, and give them my email so that they can contact me with any queries when they start the build.

But Buyer to seller, probably not. Only Ebay messaging.

JB, what is porn? Something I read about here probably. It may have been you who wrote it. Or maybe not.

I have no invoices no bank details credit card, the only login ID and passwords were on a notepad ie jxxnxxy it’s that why I am confused.

I asked to be more specific the reply

is that it’s about over 100GB of data, I have not looked at all.  I did make a backup to forward on to the seller,

Via ebay he knows my name, he wants my address to send me CD or could it be used in fraud. As I say at first it was Linda now it’s James

I am not sure, the data isn’t needed, I am concerned they may have my data.

It’s not being said what it is, surely if it’s mine I would be told

your login for — is —-

The letter is from —–

etc

Most have data as in

letters, invoices, bank details, credit card details. Details of login ID and passwords, list of names

John, when you originally bought that drive yourself, was it bought new by you? or was it used?

I ask because if it was bought second hand by you, the data that the seller describes could belong to someone else entirely. This bit worries me:

If you are sure that you never put any of that data onto that Hdd, then this guy is trying something on. Although you have to think about the fact that it was a backup drive: did you ever backup any of that data?

This is why I never resell my hard drives. If I am finished with them, it’s because I suspect they are near the end of useful life, so I destroy them. (The 160 GB I sent you had been wiped, for example, but was hardly used anyway). If I am taking them to WEE heaven at the dump, I wipe them with something like this:

My son’s Hdd was so badly damaged that I couldn’t even get it to boot and couldn’t get my PC to see it. So I gave it some 4lb. lump hammer and smashed the platters.

I know I never had invoices, bank details, credit card details, I did have login ID and passwords, list of names but they were all jumbled.

Then comes the size of the data has been put on a CD to send back to me (waiting for my address) yet it is said to be over 100GB that would take a lot of CDs.

This backup drive did have 100+GB on but there is no mention of what is on. 90% of fragile data is protected.

I just can’t imagine not wiping it. It just puts a ? on my thoughts.
