Most are Dual layer, have been a long time. Last time I used mine was to install my 3 yo router after changing ISP’s last month. I have had it so long I can’t recall when I bought it, but use has slowly decreased over the years. Not many people use them now. What is your intended use for it?

I'm out.November 17, 2017 at 7:44 pm #13577Thanks Boris n Bob
It is similar to the pic but it lies flat and a small DVD. have one of those on your links it’s too big it needs to be the zize of a laptop rom. Like the one in my link Found One (above)
My Dell 760 below

JohnNovember 17, 2017 at 7:52 pm #13581John, unless it’s going to get a ton of use just buy a USB external one. That way you can move it around without tinkering.
Look on ebay, loads available for about £10-£12 delivered, bought one about 6 weeks ago for my X220 to rip DVD and CDs, been faultless.
Edit.
November 17, 2017 at 8:00 pm #13584Thanks PM Good idea I will prope them.
Thanks for the link to yours
Edit
I got one of your link not bad nor price.
Cheers
JohnNovember 17, 2017 at 8:33 pm #13587Welcome John. Mine is actually USB 3, hope you’re as lucky as me!
November 18, 2017 at 8:36 am #13590PM when I took off the lid to swap the ram (last week) I have a PCI USB 3.0 card I was going to put in. Sadly as much as the DVD Rom is different so are the PCI slots, where the bracket is 5″ the housing is only around 2.5″
So no USB 3.0
Cheers
JohnNovember 18, 2017 at 8:55 am #13591If it’s just the bracket that’s too big – ie the printed circuit board is low profile – check the USB3 manufacturer’s website to see if they sell a low profile bracket for the card. In fact, check the box it came in to see if one was supplied.
November 18, 2017 at 9:27 am #13592Thanks JayCee
You saying that I recall seeing something like that (in some pack)
I don’t recall one for the USB3.0 card, box is long gone.
There is no Model/Name on the card, I don’t know manufacturer.
Maybe need to purchase a new card with a low profile bracket.
I think it’s PCIe not PCI, for the small slot.
Not sure, I am struggling to find specs, when I put the model in a search it brings up the Dell as in Boris’s picture with the standard DVD.
Cheers

November 18, 2017 at 11:30 am #13598Nice one Boris, both the links are helpfull, the first link is spot on. I only know that as I studied the second link.
It’s for sure the OptiPlex 760 Small Form Factor (SFF) found in the first link.
That was my Headache as there seems to be 4 brands of Dell OptiPlex 760
Dell™ OptiPlex™ 760
Mini Tower Computer
Desktop Computer
Small Form Factor Computer
Ultra Small Form Factor ComputerSo I need a Small Form Factor USB 3.0 Card
Cheers
JohnNovember 18, 2017 at 11:45 am #13600John I didn’t realise it was a SFF PC, or I would not have recommended that one. But as Nolan says, external DVDRW’s are available for a good price. I bought one a few years ago for a grandbrat’s project, she never used it and I only used it twice. What are you planning to use it for?

I'm out.November 18, 2017 at 10:14 pm #13627Thanks Bob, I have an external on the way.
I have 8GB blank media discs, I want to put backup files on. I do have a DVD writer in the Lenovo (rig 1) that will burn 8GBs but it gets tied down. So I want one for rig 2 so then the lenovo isn’t tied down.
Also I experimented and found the Dell Optiplex (rig 2) is faster than the Lenovo.
Sadly the USB DVD won’t be as fast, but it will relieve Rig 1
My True Image files are too big for DVD but they are going to USB drives (at the moment on rig 1) it’s slowed everything down (hence I am on rig 2) I need to alternate.
Ever since I lost everything on my Amiga I became backup mad. I even (then) split the Amiga HDD and copied everything to the other half.
Cheers
JohnNovember 19, 2017 at 5:53 pm #13635Would you be keeping those 8GB discs a long time John? Keep them out of direct light, especially sunlight, and away from heat, humidity or cold. People who have stored discs have discovered problems later:
I stopped storing backups on discs a long time ago. I use a simple 2TB NAS and that to a 2TB external Hdd. Photos, videos & music are on those and also on Google Drive. I keep an eye on the health of each Hdd and change them every 2 years. Format and sell them on locally via FB, it’s not worth going to Ebay.

I'm out.November 19, 2017 at 8:54 pm #13637I have found DVDs are not life time, many a DVD that I have used can’t be read.
I don’t give much to DVDs/CDs being a reliable data storage (what is) they are also backed up on USB Thumbs – Sata 2.5 HDDs – Sata Tetra 3.5″ USB HDD in a case. I also have identicals on rig 2 as I do rig 1
There was a time I had 8Gb DVDs but couldn’t burn to them, now I can I want to.
I hope never to lose the data that’s backed up on either but not much faith in DVDs/CDs.
It’s like floppy’s (what a waste) but we had one so we used it.
Edit: Thanks for the link it adds a bit of light on the reason/s
Cheers
JohnNovember 20, 2017 at 12:20 pm #13644As long as you are aware that you cannot rely upon them John. Nothing worse than finding that your storage medium has let you down. My first bitter experience with that, was with the Zip Disk, don’t know if you came across them. They had an inbuilt fail problem referred to as the “Click of Death”. That lost me some old photos that I had spent hours editing and improving, thinking “One day soon I will print those”. Unfortunately I was still working and ran out of time. Inserted disk – CLICK! Dead as dino doo-doo. They were made by Iomega. The Zip Disk: –
I built a Zip Drive into the PC I had at the time, had (10x) 100MB Disks and would have bought more, until that happened. It was a big improvement in capacity on the old Floppy, but didn’t have the floppy’s reliability. When the DVD came along that killed it off for good. I sold the drive and formatted Disks for peanuts, with a written warning on the receipt. What happened next is an unknown!
