Might want to avoid Hotspot Shield now @The Duke – https://research.csiro.au/ng/wp-content/uploads/sites/106/2016/08/paper-1.pdf
HotspotShield redirects user traffic to alibaba.com and ebay.com through its partner networks Conversant
Media and Viglink respectively. In the case of target.com, bestbuy.com, overstock.com, newegg.com and
macys.com we observed re-directions to Conversant Media."Everything looks interesting until you do it. Then you find it’s just another job" - Terry Pratchett
January 30, 2017 at 2:04 pm #2998I read a report over the weekend, on all the vpns that run on android, and non came out good, HSS was about middle of the pack.
Alot was injecting malware into phones, HSS was routing adds, but they are up fount about that so I didn’t have an issue with that.
But still my main concern with all vpns is they have all your data history coming out. So it’s all about who you trust the most.
I went with HSS as a way to watch stateside TV, and only with Teresa mays growing data wall, has privacy started to come to the forefront. So I don’t know which is the best, and it may be time to start looking a bit closer
Lol- I just looked at that paper briefly. And the reports I seen at the weekend was definatly taken from this paper. HSS as far as the reports said, it was one of the better. I know alot was taken off the play store within hours.
I’m at the hospital at 3pm ish, so I’ll read that paper then.
January 30, 2017 at 2:28 pm #3000I just emailed HSS and asked what their responce to the paper is. Their reply will be interesting. I don’t expect one fast, but they may already have a company stance already made up. I can’t be the first to ask.
January 30, 2017 at 3:12 pm #3004Yeah I’ve started paying more attention to this. The argument “I’ve done nothing wrong so have nothing to hide” is very naive these days. Streaming one thing, but anything I do banking-wise I do through my work VPN. Murky times.
January 31, 2017 at 12:55 am #3033I could get your browser, os , location etc…. Maybe later though, I’m thinking at the moment. Sent your i.p though.
Let’s see if this still works…
January 31, 2017 at 12:57 am #3034Sorry I’ve been a bit quiet lately, it was the baby’s birthday this week, so we haven’t stopped
One option I’ve been looking at is creating a personal VPN, but as I use torrents now and again, that might be a dead end. Paul O’Brien from MoDaCo has a guide here:

Well it’s got it wrong cos I’m using Vivaldi, not Chrome 😛
I’ve used my personal one on my NAS quite often for when I’m travelling. It’s extremely handy, though I’m not 100% sure that as I’m not using OpenVPN if the data is encrypted or not.

January 31, 2017 at 12:45 pm #3062Just used Dana and it’s not very good. It did pick up the correct ip for all the countries I was pretending to be in, and differnt os and browser. On a outer of occasions it picked up the same browser I was using but that was just coincidence. I think K it was just picking up the output end of the vpn and that was running chrome.
Where Dana fell apart was when I turned my vpn off and it got my actual ip bit failed to get my OS or browser. Stating I was on a mac using safari. I don’t think I’ve every used safari, not even on ios.
So I’m not sure what Dana is a typical doing.
Everyone that has put up a Dana test grab you may want to remove it, but as everyone you repost on the thread or load it, or it refreshed tour post and updates you ip. So you may want to remove that.
I just done two separate posts, wanting to compare, the outputs from tow browsers and the countries, and the both alway read read same outcome of that currant test.
Still waiting on a reply from Hotspot shield, but I think it’s actual quite a decent service, all be it with flaws. But I am going to be delving deeper.
January 31, 2017 at 12:52 pm #3063It just occurred to me, that Dana test shows your what your ip is. Meaning not you the poster, but the current viewer of it.
E amped you could post look at my strange results, and show a Dana thing., but what I look at it I see my data not yours.
Strange bit of code.
February 1, 2017 at 12:23 am #3120It’s designed to show the viewer their details, and make them aware of what info they’re giving out. I’ve been using it for at least nine years, so it’s not doing too badly considering.
February 1, 2017 at 12:33 am #3123It still assists I’m on a mac, it’s got my ip and provider correct. I’m now on my Nexus 6p and both this and my Pixel it think are macs running safari! Early it did say linux, which is technically correct.
It does at least show my vpn works,at masking ip and carrier.
See attached screen grab, I covered my ip as that’s my actual one.
Edit sorry the pic is so dark. Looks like Twilight messes SS up. This is my 6p,you can tell cos of the icons I’m sure.
