I’m trying to save that Route 500 on my Google Maps so I can just open it later and start the navigation but it doesn’t seem to be possible. I can only save a maximum of 10 spots. But that is nowhere near enough. If I just place 10 locations along the route it misses almost all of the route and takes me to those spots via different (I guess quicker) roads. Is there a way to save a long and complex route and prevent a route recalculation?
August 10, 2018 at 6:05 pm #24543You’ll need to use a PC. You can draw your route onto the map then save it. Then you open It on your phone.
This is how it was about 8 years ago, so I’d do a less complex trial run before you commit to your larger route.
Update to let me know if it still works
August 10, 2018 at 7:34 pm #24549The only way to draw a route is to go to “Directions” and specify a starting and a finishing point. In my case it’s the same point so I specify two point a short distance apart. I draws the shortest route but if I hover the cursor above the blue line (the route) a grey circle appears on the blue line. I can then left click and drag that circle to where I want my route to go. That way it keeps redrawing it. After some dragging I managed to get the route drawn but there is no way of saving it that I can find. There is an option of sending it to my phone or share it on media or even copy the link. But whichever way I chose the end result is the shortest distance from start to finish. The route is there, I can see it drawn (with some funny glitching artefacts) but it can’t be used for navigation.
August 10, 2018 at 7:48 pm #24551You could try OpenStreet Map (the Android App version OSMAnd), together with this method. (read section 4 as he starts off using pre-recorded Garmin data — section 4 uses Google maps for its GPS data)
I personally prefer OSMAnd as it has a large quantity of World Maps for a reasonable price, allows full off-line mapping and has a large number of Map add-ons from cycle routes, contouring, Wiki links, (for some reason these are called plug-ins)
Whenever I go off-track on a walking trip I load the OSM map for the region before-hand. (these are quite large maps). About the only area where Google Maps is better is for restaurants in an area (figures!), but in some areas OSM beats Google on pubs — very dependent on a local population of nerd boozers!
Worth a look.
August 10, 2018 at 8:55 pm #24558Ed P thx for that, I think My Maps is what will allow me to get it done. I did it 4 times now but f@cked each one. The whole thing is very unsophisticated. But I will get it right eventually.
August 11, 2018 at 7:34 am #24571Sorry that didn’t work, I know you could draw a route once. I can’t check now as I’m in France, and for the first year left my laptop and work at home. Sorry.
Glad you got some headway with my maps.
On way you could Fudge it with g maps, if my maps fails you is to drop a load of ‘pins’ and save them along your route, then just drive from ‘pin to pin’ . I used that method last week to navigate a hand full of places in Spain. Not perfect though.
August 11, 2018 at 1:35 pm #24581I made one a few years ago for a motorbike run. It only had four checkpoints, but I dragged the dots to change the route, and they stuck. It’s here if you want to have a look and see if anything looks helpful:
As an aside, goo.gl is closing, hence the long url.
August 11, 2018 at 2:00 pm #24582By creating the route in My Maps I can get it all done even though it’s a pig of a job. Even one mistake means starting again from the beginning as I couldn’t find any way to make a correction. This is “drawing” the route from start to finish. Another way is to created the start and finish points first and then drag points to where required. This way corrections can be made but it was also very buggy. But either way the route created in My Maps can only be followed, it won’t work as a satnav.
Another option is to use “Directions” where only 10 points can be created. But break up the route into as many sections as required to cover the entire route and just number them. That way it can be used as a satnav one section at a time.
