Chester Races

Went to Chester Races on Friday as a work outing – was an interesting experience. Have never been to horse racing before so it was an good day out. No luck on the horses mind!

I go the second sat of July each year. Great day out, very long. Sadly my hols clash this year!

If the weather is fine it can be a great day out – relatively inexpensive as well if you don’t back too many old nags. Strangest race-course I ever went to was in Harare, I felt really out of place in my sub-tropics formal wear (short sleeved white shirt, tie and long trousers), as everyone else (mostly ruling party members including Ebagum) were sweltering in full morning suits.

yes a great day out (I know some are opposed and fair enough). Picking a smaller course for a “normal” meeting there are som great hospitality deals too – nice sit down meal etc.

Used to do Royal Ascot every year but full of idiots now, so prefer Champions Day in October when it is a much better crowd. Loved to watch the Derby for free on Epsom Downs when what seemed like the whole of London would take the Wednesday off work and go there. Ruined it when they moved it to a Saturday. We have a little Jolly to Newmarket most years too at the end of the season.

I lose more than I win but the odd day you come with more money than you went out with – can’t beat it.

Yeah Ascot this weekend just gone, Goodwood weekend before. Normally not racing fans, just drunk blokes with Dutch courage. Get them at boxing a lot too now – ruins the events.

Stick them in the ring, one on one with rules and watch them lose interest in it all!!! Most of what I saw on the news was “punch and run, dart back in, punch someone else and run”, or one guy holding someone, while somebody else punched or kicked them.

A surprise to me was that a young woman was one of the people who went out and attacked others who were apparently just by-standers at that stage. Hopefully she was one of those arrested.

No surprise to me Ed. Young women, especially in drink, are just as likely to attack anyone nowadays. Actually that’s been true for some time. In 1998 I was confronted by a (ahem!) young female person who objected to me stopping her from jumping a queue. She threatened to “Punch my lights out” whereupon I said that, if she wanted to behave like that, I would knock her spark out before she could move against me. She left the queue, with a torrent of excruciatingly bad language.

Many women seem to have thw view that they can say anything to a man, as the can’t hit them.

I’d have no issue putting one in her place. I don’t condone violence it men or women. see no diffence between the two, if one is threatening me, they’ll be treated as equals.

Isn’t that what women want anyhow? Or do they only want equality when it suits them!

Unfortunately Steve I suspect that the law and a jury would not view it in the same way. Although you could plead necessary self defence, you would get stuffed with the ‘proportionate force bit’ and have one heck of a job proving your case, as you would also have to show that you were unable to take avoiding action.  Better to noisily act tough, and then be prepared to run like hell!

Id only defend myself with adequate force, just as I would with a guy. Most women wouldn’t need the same force. I woundnt then kick her round the floor. Even if I wanted to.

Fortunately i dont get them type of women, though I do see them. I attract the mental old women. They seem to gravitate towards me. And I never know how long is long enough to listen to their ramblings about life.

 

Two weeks ago I was in Warrington, I nipped into a pub to use the toilet, when I come out this old lady got me, and then spent 30 mins telling me how God or the devil is at fault for Warrington now being classed in Cheshire. Iirc she said it was Lancashire, and the whole place was no cursed.

I get these type all the time. It’s why I don’t get the bus.

Had a nutter on a bus from Derby to Stoke once, offering to sell me something in a box, unseen. “Greatest bargain you will ever get! Only a Fiver!”

I excused myself, got up into the aisle and started searching my pockets. “What are you looking for?” – “Can’t find my knife!”

He was downstairs and off the bus in about 15 seconds, rang the bell and jumped just before it stopped. I waved to him as we set off again.

I had no knife. You have to out-nutter the nutters.

Attracting them runs in my family. We bought my father a T-shirt that says ‘Why do all the nuters sit next to me?’ 😀
