Avast just announced (2017.07.19) that the company has acquired the software company Piriform, best known for the software program CCleaner for Windows.
Piriform’s flagship product is CCleaner, a temporary file cleaner and traces remover for Windows. The company has created other respectable programs such as Speccy, a hardware inventory software, Defraggler, a file defragmentation program, and Recuva, a file recovery application.

July 22, 2017 at 12:02 pm #10400Oh bugga! I don’t use it, but I know several around here who do. I am not keen on Avast, having seen 2 PC’s with malware/adware problems that were supposed to be prevented by Avast. I suggested they change to something else: “but it’s FREE!” – “And it doesn’t work, what does that tell you?”
I am aware that there is a paid for Avast version, but there are many basic – pensioners in this Senior Ghetto. I have Kaspersky TS. The only thing going for Avast IME, is that it is not Macafee or Norton.

I'm out.July 22, 2017 at 2:34 pm #10403Good for Piriform. It’s a small, private company (or was) with only a handful of employees. Hopefully some people made a lot of money, showing that hard work, perseverance, and the provision of quality products over many years really can pay off. Of course, it’s now yet another British company that’s fallen into foreign ownership, but hey-ho. Fingers crossed Avast doesn’t mess about with things too much (though I expect it will cripple the free versions and push for subscriptions).
July 22, 2017 at 3:40 pm #10406Haven’t used CCleaner for years Jason, as I do my own PC “Housework”. But I know plenty of people who do use it and rely on it. I don’t think I will mention this around here, if one of them calls for help I can truly plead ignorance. Hope Avast doesn’t mess around with it. AFAIK it ain’t broke, why fix it?
Well done to the CC team though, hope they go on to bigger and better things.

But as Jason said, good for them.
July 25, 2017 at 1:25 am #10482I still use Ccleaner every night (well early morning) before turning off the PC.
Brilliant programme.
