I’m sure that’s good advice for people who want the ultimate photograph. I’m long past that these days and I’m looking for convenience as long as it isn’t obviously detrimental. Let’s face it most times we looking at a photo in a maximum of 1080P on a screen, often a very small one.

I think his advice was just a practical observation that the digital zoom did not add more pixels and the autocrop etc may not be as good as doing it yourself. However as you imply, convenience often outweighs perfection.

As PM shoots artistically pleasing photos, I thought he may want to be able to get the very best from his shots.

Setting the camera to HDR can give you an oustanding chance of getting killer photos.

Just stumbled across this now and realised that we purchased a TZ90, seperately without seeing this thread, for our honeymoon!

Cracking camera – got some lovely shots from the honeymoon!

Totally off-topic, but I love the photograph of the woman doing Tai Chi. It may be interesting to play with your Lumix taking time-lapse photos while mounted on a rotating platform. A good Pi project but unfortunately I have too many at the moment!

Smashing pics Chris, might use one for a background if that’s OK with you?

Ed, I followed that link and lost 10 minutes!

                    Thanks all.

Got some shots early yesterday with the new camera and I’m really impressed. Need slightly better conditions to give the superzoom a proper chance to show what it can do. Or not.

I’m sure the TZ90 would have done a fine job on most of the shots where the extra zoom wasn’t needed but the moon was a bit too much for it.

I love them both, the TZ90 literally comes everywhere with me (apart from the gym) and it’s tiny size makes it ideal for that purpose. The Z82 will be coming with me a lot when I don’t need to do other things (like shopping) where rucksack space is needed more than a second camera.

Ed, I know what you mean about settings. Tons of them and some cancel out others so it’s certainly a learning curve. Thanks for the authors name, I’ll see how I go and then maybe check him out.

Dunno about the camera Chris but even with anti-shake it takes a lot to hold a small camera rock steady for a zoomed moon shot!

Tell me about it, this is the best I could do hand held at night.

                          DMC-TZ70 ƒ/3.9 1/2 sec 7.8 mm ISO1600

I’ve been looking at the panoramas we’ve taken this year with the TZ70 and most are really good. Lens flare is the only issue but not much I can do about that with a compact. The best photos though are all about composition. One of my favoutites is this one the Mrs took.

You don’t need to ask where it was taken and it sums the place up. Hard to fail, took itself, except it didn’t if you look at the ones around it where she was playing with the composition.

@ PM Mega lens flair on sunrise.

@ Dave if you caught the stars into that picture as well then all is forgiven.

It wasn’t that long after sunset. I have a photo from 200 metres away taken 2 hours later that looks like it was 2 hours earlier, purely down to a different foreground.

The camera really struggles with high contrast at night, which was a bummer for the Amsterdam Light Festival. Being on a canal boat didn’t help, nor did the freezing wind. So we went back to our favourites and took them from the canal side. Even then this one needed 1/2 second as the “cracks” were a lot more subtle than your eye thinks they are.

I had purchased a table tripod by then but there was nowhere to put it!

If yer cameras supports HDR give it a go. In HDR Mode the camera takes 3 pictures and then combines them. The idea is in HDR mode that the camera sees like we do. The camera shoud save all 3 shots so if you do not like the HDR you get a choice of 2 conventional shots. In this picture you can actually see the stars. bu t no doubt its not seeable on the forum. I use HDR mode on heck of a lot. Also most of us look ugly on photo except for the few. With HDR on there is a good chance that we will lokk normal and not so ugly.

Keith, they both have HDR and also iHDR, if you get the settings right.

Using HDR/iHDR without a tripod can be a challenge unless the light, subject etc is in your favour.

Ed, I’ve had a fotopro UFO2 tripod for a while, it feels way more sturdy than a Jody gorillapod.

Easily holds the Z82 upright, or in any other position.

I got a Manfrotto MTPIXI-B, PIXI Mini Tripod with Handgrip as when it’s on you can, as it says, use it as a handgrip. That helps handheld too.

Rather defeats the idea of getting the TZ70 😀 which was to have a pocketable camera, but I only take it with me if I’m going out at night to deliberately get some shots. Geneva springs to mind as it was after that I got it. The Panasonic has an Android and iOS app which makes shooting with it a lot easier. I can put it down wherever needed then move myself to a more comfortable place.

I dont know how any one could be a contented photographer with the inconsistancy of every thing when it comes to taking photos.

Unless you got some mega super zoom and can get nifty shots of a Royals titis.
