As expected, Brexit has been a total disaster. Even the vaunted trade deal with Australia was worse than that negotiated by the EU. The ex-trade minister recently stated that the best thing about the Australia deal is the exit clause, and he negotiated it all!
Unfortunately the Brexit hardliners just do not understand that exporters ALWAYS have to comply with the many different regulations of importing countries. Using our own regulations is rarely acceptable to other than third world tinpot countries. I see that these right-wing Conservative idiots are now trying to head off a Swiss type deal that would reopen our EU trade (which has gone down the pan post-Brexit) and solve the Irish border problem.
Unfortunately we cannot go back to where we were in 2015, but we desparately need pragmatic compromises to avoid further damage to our economy.
I really wish we had a very different form of Government to our totally broken democracy which is ruled by unelected short-term bigotted dictators!
November 20, 2022 at 11:10 pm #70258Interesting that a Swiss type deal has been pumped into the grapevine.
It was a way that I thought things would go with the vote being so tight and the narrative was to bring the country back together again. Instead we had deliberately divisive actions and the whole country held to ransom by a hand full of extreme Brexiteers. I think their day is over.
Steve Barclay couldn’t bring himself to acknowledge the economic damage done, just saying there were pros and cons. We can see the cons and apart from the inevitable vaccine roll out we could have done anyway, he didn’t actually mention the pros.
Thank God Rees-Mogg was removed before he could trash our laws and give massive power to a handful of ministers, riding rough shod over devolution in the process. This what they wanted, the ability to run their extreme policies without inference (Corbyn wanted the same). Where are the other countries that would be following our courageous lead?

I now look forward to how these idiots will do all the marvelous things like controlling our borders (hah!) and open up our trade borders to the worlds fastest growing markets (ignore the risk that more UK people will be out of work due to cheap imports).
It will also be VERY revealing to compare the EU deal with CFTPP and the one we get!
I really wish that @VFM were back on this forum to defend the high economic costs and lack of benefits that Brexit has brought.
