Hello guys, I is returned to Williams Towers.
Apparently they killed the bug off yesterday, no problems today, the very nice Asian Doc gave me an “all clear” to come home. Everyone else did their job, I was washed and brushed-up, packed by 30 minutes after a lovely lunch of chicken & vegetable casserole. All that was left was Pharmaceuticals to sort out all the several dozen potions and pills I have to take now. By 3:30 pm no show from them. At 4:00 I went down there with Boss Nurse (caring, lovely, but you don’t mess with her!) and we sorted them out. By 4:45 I was in my little Hyundai and off home, after thanking Security for parking it under their office and looking after it. Each shift had been informed about my situation, I thanked those guys for their attention. My poor little iX20 had been sat outside under the weather and the security lights, but started on the button and soon got warm.
I have to complement Grimsby DPoW hospital staff (excepting Pharma layabouts) for the best of care from every (other) department: nothing was too much trouble. Food was all good, my only problems were caused by my prostate. I struggled to release myself from the pipes and machine when I needed the loo!
Back soon, but remember the internet trouble I had? Came home to find that BT OR had cabled us up properly, check these speeds out:
I get almost as much as No.1 gson, who is on BT Business Broadband.
Thank you all for your concern and good wishes, I could read but not login in hospital. Special thanks to Lee, who kept Forumites in touch with my problems. Hope you are recovered from your several disasters, Lee?

Pharmacy were always the bane of my life when trying to get home, but in UHW they were servicing a huge hospital of inpatients and outpatients, and the representatives on the renal wards are lovely, so I couldn’t get too upset with them.
I want to know your secret now that you’re home though – who did you have to sleep with / threaten to get your internet sorted? ??
November 27, 2018 at 9:00 am #28579Welcome back Bob. After my second bout of iritis I found the eye hospital had shut their own pharmacy. You had the choice of going to the Boots in the main hospital (BRI) and wait for them to do it (it’s a massive place, long waits) or have it sent to your local (Boots only) pharmacy or home delivery (if you can show you’re disabled) within 36 – 48 hours, or have it posted to you.
What use is that? If you’ve been to outpatients and been given medication it’s unlikely you can wait that long. What if it’s after 7pm or a Sunday or Bank Holiday when the BRI Boots is shut? Can the NHS no longer afford pharmacists?
No wonder people are saying it’s privatisation through the back door. But there is a Costa Coffee, WHS and M&S Simply food to cater for you while you wait. It’s called the Welcome Centre.
Enough of the rant ? Enjoy those new BB speeds ?
November 27, 2018 at 9:20 am #28580It seems to be the same all over – last week my friend came out after a week in hospital. Something that will resonate with Bob, he went in with internal bleeding. It turned out it was from an ulcer in his oesophagus, caused by acid reflux eating away at the digestive tract aided by one of his heart meds. So a change of heart meds, transfusions and blood tests.
When he was well enough to come home he had to wait two and a half hours in the discharge lounge ( sound like a very comfortable toilet!! ) waiting for his multiple meds and when they got home half of them were wrong!!
November 27, 2018 at 9:45 am #28581Welcome back Bob, sepsis nothing to be messed about with so I know you will have had a rough time of things, glad you are better now, and keep on trucking.
The pharmacy wait has been a feature of hospital discharges for a very long time. Fifteen or twenty years ago the local hospital set a record for us of 48 hours to get the medicine available. Happily there was enough at home to tide things over until the hospital came up with the goods. Now with a different hospital it is the same. My wife was discharged last Monday, no discharge letter and no medication available. The letter was posted on afterwards, we think it was written about another patient as it said the admission was an emergency case – it was not and said my wife was free of allergies, she is not. They did go to extensive efforts to avoid triggering an allergies, which was more than they achieved with the lady in the next bed whose stay was extended by 8 days…
As for the discharge drugs, we hope to collect them today as there are appointments for this afternoon. I was not happy to make the 40 mile round trip before, as it would mean leaving my wife alone for three hours at a time when leaving her was contra indicated. There was no postal option given. Since some of the items are controlled drugs I can understand restrictions but it was fortunate that we had our own semi private stash of the medicines in question.
Dave, chemists have always been private contractors as have GPs and most dentists since the foundation of the NHS, though having a contractor run pharmacies on hospital sites is not one I have encountered before. The local hospital has about a 3 hour turn round time on a good day if you are a walk in patient, ward deliveries take longer. We have persuaded the consultant to issue an open prescription that we can take to the local pharmacy where service is usually about 20 minutes.

November 27, 2018 at 3:55 pm #28587Thanks guys, the best thing about coming back (apart from my missus’ hugs and lamb chop dinner) was the shower. First proper shower in almost 2 weeks, I stood under the flow for ages.
Dave and Richard: in Grimsby hospital it is Lloyd’s Pharmacy running the service. They have a large Pharma ‘shop’ in the centre. The gradual, creeping privatisation of the NHS worries me, but this gov is determined to carry on with it. Apropos of nothing, I just learned that one of the biggest hospitals in the country, Queen’s Medical in my old birthplace of Nottingham, is £33 Million in debt and may be refused further funding. I know the place well, having been treated there when I was a Notts resident. It is a nightmare to navigate to the area you need, but it is also a centre of excellence in research and development of new treatments and medical technology.
I have discovered from the document concerning my meds and a timetable for taking them, the name of the condition I was suffering: Febrile Neutropenia: http://tinyurl.com/y9jwbs5j
It lists the fever as being > 100.3ºF, or 37.95ºC. For my first week in Grimsby, I never went below 41ºC, or 105.8ºF. I gradually came down to 39ºC, then 37ºC, which is the ‘norm’ of 98ºF. For that first week, I was cold on the outer body and shivering, whilst having a high core temperature. I was shaking as if I had malaria and I felt really, really ill. I was permanently hooked up to an antibiotic drip and a liquid Paracetamol drip. I lost another few Kg and I still feel wobbly, keep expelling big lumps of nasty (fortunately dead) crap from nose and chest. This all stems from the chemo, which as others here will recognise, lowers the ability of the immune system to cope with infection.
I have gathered more medical education than I would have wished for…..???
