Bob, I well remember the utter relief that was felt when polio vaccinations came in, our generation was one that was heavily touched by such matters either by other children deaths, or being maimed, seeing the results or hearing parents whisper full of worry. Several close ‘associates’ were victims of so called childhood illnesses such as measles, one died at the time another suffered brain damage and died after years of suffering.
What now gets my goat is the damned anti vaccination mob, with their crap about filling babies and children with poisons and how polio, measles, mumps, whooping cough and yes hepatitis, etc. don’t matter. When you know the results of those ‘little events’ you want to kill those stupid zealots, before they kill others.
July 15, 2017 at 3:54 pm #10224In my area only a very small percent of little tykes like myself were affected by Polio – probably because we and our siblings/friends used to play from an early age in an estuary which was heavily polluted with raw sewage. As a result we probably acquired some natural immunities either directly or through siblings. link . The ones who were very badly affected were the children of the better-off classes, probably because their natural immunities were much lower.
July 15, 2017 at 4:07 pm #10226Richard I remember those old diseases and I share your feelings about the anti-vaccinationists, obsessed with their own misguided “knowledge”. The baby who would have been my sister and older than me by 19 years, has “Diptheria” as a cause of death, at 3 months, on the certificate. My parents had 3 sons, but no more children: having lost a daughter and then a very difficult birth (me, hoped-for as a daughter) many years later, was I believe a cause of my mother’s mental problems. It was many years before I learned that it was not diptheria at all. My SIL, whose mother died when she was young, became as close as a daughter to my mother and she told me that. Apparently it was a restriction of the gullet and problems with digestion: my sister could not swallow food without it coming back again. She starved to death, which must have been horrific for my parents, doubly so for my mother, to lose a first baby like that.
Years later, I developed similar problems. Continuing Reflux led to a condition called Barretts Oesophagus, which means that stomach acid in the gullet, leads to the gullet developing a lining in self-defence, which is very much like a stomach lining. The gullet therefore shrinks, which is why I have to cut up food very small and chew it thoroughly. That sounds very like the problem my poor baby sister might have experienced. Nowadays of course, I was able to have a correct diagnosis and proper medication.
The only other family member to suffer from this that I know of, was a nephew, some 17 years younger than me. He was the black sheep of my brother’s 7 children, a real rogue: gambler in high-stakes poker, big drinker. He was divorced from his wife and she took the children, he lived in a really rough area and I never saw him for years, until he was diagnosed with cancer of the gullet, which spread to his neck and face. He died 2 years ago at Christmas, but I learned from his consultant at the Hospice, that his problems began with Barretts Oesophagus. He refused all treatment for it and never had the annual camera/biopsy routine that I have. The consultant also told me that the biopsies are important to check for any rogue cells. He gave me a letter for my own consultant and told me that he believed that Barrets was hereditary.
The family took back my nephew into the fold after he became ill. His big sister and I were the instigators of this, after finding him in a local hospital. His last few months were not pleasant to see. I sincerely hope that no other family member has this condition.
