A friend asked me for a new PC – “W10” he said, “OK” said I.  Having discovered the eventual location of the CoA – see previous thread – all went ok, but can’t really say that I like W10 at the moment and it is getting even more so by the minute. You may have guessed that this is my first W10 build.  I know he used FF on his current PC (XP!!) so I thought use ‘Ninite’ and get the whole lot downloaded w/o any bloat.  M/Edge and Bing – searched Ninite – got it – it took and age to connect with the small circular disks in the top LH corner spinning. Eventually got there, selected what I wanted, got Installer and waited and waited and waited – installing (great!!) then message:

It wasn’t possible to connect to the revocation server or a definitive response could not be obtained (0x00072f19) Certificate are in ( … can’t read my writing..[possibly are in revocation check] ) 2017-02-10  316

Ok Googled this and eventually came up with changing the settings in IE – but I don’t have IE I have Edge – ok tried the top RH corner in Edge … More  (options) – No tools at all. Seems that many are having this problem, but MS are still directing people to this fix.

So tried to install FF via a direct download – Edge spun and spun and eventually message:

“Hmm, can’t reach the page try ….”

Similar when I try to get “forumite.co.uk”, yet when I type ‘Aria’ immediate response

The obvious suggestion is the my internet is faulty – it isn’t – I can get Ninite in seconds on my i7 W7 system which is attached to the same switch as the new build is.

Any ideas please – just found a MS site on this, anyone able to help just in case?

Download the Chrome/FF .exe on another PC, use that to grab what you want from ninite.

Edge is a pile of poo.

IE is still there in W10 as well as 10 as Edge – not recommending it but it might save you using another PC – just type “internet explorer” in to the cortana/search and you should see it (you can pin it to start from the search results)…..

Just done a quick dummy run on Ninite with Edge and it worked AOK though….so maybe something else?

Edge is woeful in many respects but is a handy media browser, probably the best one if you have a “networked media” home – that’s all I use it for.

I’ve never had this problem with 10 and I’ve done loads.

I use Ninite to get the software on too so I know it works.

Check your date and time in case it’s the classic issue where the browser rejects a site as it’s certificate has expired.

I suspect though it’s edge and as BL says, IE is still there and for all it’s faults it’s still capable of getting Ninite running.

What annoys me is when I use Chrome I often get a pop up from Microsoft telling me how much better Edge is!

No time and date are correct – I’ve done a bit of Googling and that was one of the first things that  came up. Will try some of the ideas here tomorrow.

              Thanks all

Bloody hell, just give him Linux, Try Mint, tell him it’s Windows without viruses. And he doesn’t have to hunt for software, it’s all for free in the software manager.

He’ll be happy as larry, and you can dump the unofficial support.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

I might agree with you if Dwynne’s experience was typical, but it isn’t.

I’ve probably done over 100 upgrades / installs / resets of 10 by now and never had anything remotely like this problem.

As for dumping the support, wait until your Linux user goes into PC World and buys the latest flashy all in one printer.

Or spends £100 on MS office and wants to know why it won’t work.

Been there, not doing that again.

                    Thanks D-Dan and DaveR.

My friend is a solicitor and needs his PC at home to be able to ‘speak with’ his office PC and also the office use ‘Office 365’ – I know precious little about W10 and even less of any Linux distro – so that option is out.

I have now been able to use Ninite on IE w/o any problems – big question now is how do I remove Edge from the toolbar and replace it with IE? More Googling I fear.  My first experience with W10 has been quite an eyeopener – the start menus and the tiles on the desktop are so different to what I have been used to – more akin to mobile / tablet systems – none of which I really like – where it probably works better, give me the old start menus every time.

I suspect there may have been some updates needed or being installed. People told MS they hated the intrusion of updates so it does a lot of stuff silently.

Pinning programs to the Task Bar is really easy.

I find that using the search bar is probably the quickest way of finding a program than trawling through the Start menu, but the pinning method is the same.

So, in “Search right here” type ie and you’ll see under best match Internet Explorer.  Right click it’s icon and choose Pin to Taskbar.

With Edge right click on it’s icon in the Taskbar and choose unpin.

If you want to move an icon just drag it left or right on the Taskbar.

                      Dead easy.
