CCLOnline cocked it up. 2 items out of stock yet I specifically chose items they said were in stock.

Emailed me yesterday which I missed. Why they couldn’t pick up the phone is beyond me.

I got a royal mail delivery notice yesterday saying they delivered my ccl order. I didn’t order anything.

I necked the links and it was a legit RM email, so I just gathered someone with a similar email mid typed.

Question to Dave, when you check out at Ccl. Can you check out as a guest? Ie not make an account and check out with PayPal or similar? And just put in an email for the receipt?

I know many stores do this, and I’ve not used Ccl for about 5 years, so I can’t remember/ don’t know if they now have guest check out. I always go for guest check out when I can, for sites I don’t use often.

Spoke to them earlier, very helpful.

Parts are now in the warehouse and they checked they will be available for dispatch today. Explained why I needed them yesterday (hectic and potentially random schedule this week depending on others, like TT & BT, doing their bit first) and they bumped my delivery to a pre 10am tomorrow.

            Hi Dave

I only just read your post about the ageing i7 CAD machine. A problem with the i7 800 series is that it only has PCIe v2 lanes in the graphics slot. The first generation PCH is almost identical to an ICH10 so it only has PCIe v1. Even if there is an extra SATA 3 controller on the mother board it can only run at about half speed.

For the above reason I went for the i7930 with 36 PCIe v2 lanes from its X58 chip. The SATA 3 and USB 3 controllers on my mother board each have their own PCIe v2 lane and I get more or less full speed.

I may have posted something like the above before. If so then sorry for repeating myself. I sometimes forget what I post where ?

On a different note then I upgraded the memory last week from 6GB to 12GB and the only program to show improvement was the DOOM reboot. Doom says it requires 8GB as a minimum and it showed a slight stutter sometimes with on 6 but now it dosent.

I have 8gb in mine, and only gta5 max’s that out. I’d imaging it would 128gb if I had it.

Regarding the ccl msg I got of royal mail, it turned out ccl was the name of a chines company that I used. Given it was a nothing item, with a 6 week wait, I’d simply forgotten about the order, and never know the company name. Lol. So nothing to do with ccl online. I’m an idiot.

Well I’ve kept quiet about this one as it’s had it’s problems. Once CCL had managed to get everything here….

It wouldn’t boot. Motherboard diagnostic lights indicated the CPU so back it went. CCL tested, seems OK. Got delivered here today, still no boot. Hmm, perhaps I’ve damaged the mobo in some way? Shit that’s £200’s worth, but I’ve built hundreds of PCs and never damaged anything.

Light bulb moment, try the PSU. Yep it was the 650 watt Thermaltake PSU. It’s got a Corsair 430 Watt in it now but PSU calculator says 380 watt so I’ll get a replacement fitted.

Windows 10 installed in a flash.

This is really doing my head in now.

Corsair CX 650M arrives this morning, it’s the big brother of the 430 that works. It won’t boot.

Same issue as the original Thermaltake Paris 650, it tries to start then stops then starts again. The 430 does this too but in a few seconds it boots. The 650 keeps going but no boot, the Thermaltake starts and stops ad infinitum and you can hear a solenoid clicking ever time it stops.

WTF is going on? There is an option in the Bios to apply a dummy load to stop PSU going into a fail safe if the voltage drops too low. It makes no difference and if it is this why is the 430 unaffected?

Bios up date? Try new bios battery? does the bios suffer from some kind of reset on power off? Check bios reset button?

Pull all sticks bar 1 and take it from there? R all the sticks the same stuff? Try manual ram timming settings, set lower? etc?

                          🙂

I figure it has some thing to do with the ram/bios. Also when you get in set the ram volttage higher. then try new psu.

Does the mobo need more power connecters when switch to the new 650 PSU.

The mobo has a 24 pin ATX and 8 pin CPU. I don’t need any other connectors as no SATA drives and the GX1050Ti is pci-e power (it’s currently got a GT210 in to lessen the load).

The only difference in the 430 and 650 is that the 650 has another 6 pin pci-e and more juice available all round.

I’ve been in touch with CCL and they agree it’s probably the motherboard, but I’m sending back PSU, mobo, ram and CPU so they can test it all together.

But I tell you when it’s running it’s ridiculously fast which I put down to the WD Black M2 as much as anything else. Reboot times are <5 seconds.

Many years ago (ive told this before) when I built my i7 920, I got half the parts from ccl and half from somewhere else. Ccl was fantastic. They rebuilt my rig their end, (including the bits I bought elsewhere) and tested it for days. it come back the issue was ram compatibility, even though it was ment to be compatible.

They swapped the cheaper ram with some decent g skill ram for free. I don’t know why I moved away from ccl. I’ve bought a few tvs (when they want cheap), and recommended them often. Mainly due to the service they showed me.

                                      Hi again Dave.

I hope CCL have sorted your problem but if not it is certainly true that switching supplies like those in a PC need some load to run. Higher power PSUs tend to require a higher minimum load. I cant work out if you are using any disks at all in your system but it may be worth attaching a spinner just to see what happens. The problem is usually on the 12+ rail and a spinner will draw more than the required 1A on start up.

Anyway good luck and let us know what happens.

CCL reckon it’s the PSU. I have asked them to provide a replacement that the can prove works with the system. That was 2 days ago.

Come to think of it I may have had a related problem when I first upgraded to W10. I started getting random shutdowns.

When the PC was under heavy load things were fine but under light load or at the desktop it would just switch off after a minute or two.

I changed the power profile to max performance and stopped everything but the monitor from sleeping like I had it under W7 and the problem went away.

I thought it was a Windows problem but now I wonder if power saving was leaving me with too little load ?

The BIOS allows you to apply an artificial load but it made no difference. In any case at boot up there’s a GTX 1050Ti getting all it’s power from the 12v line.

CCL has just recommended I use the same Corsair 650 that I have here that won’t boot it either! I’m on holiday next week so they have a few extra days.
