Only recently returned from a trip to European countries. In particular, he visited the Czechs, Poland, Germany, France and Ukraine. Each country has its own alcoholic drinks, but since I’m not a fan of wine and champagne, I’ve focused on beer and strong drinks: rum, cognac, and whiskey.

In the Czechs, I liked a few types of Becherov. A very delicious drink and rightly there is no hangover, just on its basis make chic cocktails. Very popular kraft beer. Also, I really enjoyed the dark beer of Krusovice. Strong, with a pleasant aftertaste.

In Poland – lots of craft beer. It was very tasty to drink it with a national dish – a pork knee stuck.

In Germany, beer was perhaps the most delicious especially with sausages.

In Ukraine, I was pleased with the tinctures on Vodka. Taste variety is incredible, fruit, honey, berry. Also very popular kraft beer. By the time I finally tried the real Ukrainian lard and chicken Kiev cutlets.

And what kind of drinks did you like from abroad?

Paulaner Beer from Bavaria: I have visited Füssen and Munich many times in the past. Not so many North German beers, although I did like Warsteiner. I was 8 years in Germany (BAOR) in the late 60’s and 1970’s. I skiied at some place near the old FRG – Czecoslovak border, but cannot recall the name: it was a strange area, then as now apparently. I was a Langlauf skiier (cross-country) not downhill, and was once threatened by a Communist bloc border guard, for skiing too close to the wire. There was a Gasthaus in a small village which brewed its own, cannot recall the name, but a lovely, hoppy dark beer with a kick.

Sadly, due to various operations and medical conditions, I cannot drink alcohol now. The memory of taste is fleeting!

Pelforth blond and amber are really nice. If a little strong. The brown is ok too, but very strong. It’s part of the reason we go to or through France every summer.

The blond is my fav. Even though as a rule I don’t like the trendy blond beers.

I seen Czech Bud in a keg in tesco last week for £15. Going a friend’s next weekend, I’ll probably grab one.

A picture speaks a thousand words Dave!

I like the Dunkel dark beers in Germany Austria and I suppose technically the Irish Republic is oversees so a shout for the best pint of Guiness in the world at the Gravediggers (aka the Kavanagh) in Dublin.

Beers galore all over the place now, I draw the line at the Blue Moon wheat beer I had in the states that came with a big slice of Orange in it. Too far.

It was a stinking hot day and that beer was cold – perfect. It’s miles away from your Blue Moon wheat beer which is more Belgian in style. Never seen the Belgians put a slice of anything in their beer though. I suspect you’d be shot.

Back in Vienna it was usually Gosser Spezial in the bars near the hotel, your standard south German type lager but again perfect in the summer weather. Austrian but now owned by Heineken who thankfully have left it alone.

We’re going to Bruges for the day (part of a 3 night taster cruise) in 3 weeks time and I’m determined to visit the Halve Maan Brewery, home of me and the Mrs favourite Zot blonde. We’ve been to Bruges twice before so have seen the tourist traps bits to death. Gentse Strop (blonde) is nice on a hot day, problem is all the Belgian stuff is 6% + and doesn’t taste like it so you have to remember to stop before it’s too late ?

Got caught out like that in Bratislava years back – working our way through the local beers then ending up trollied – they were all 8% ish and never tasted that way at all.

I visited the Corfu brewery a few years back, micro-brewery in the North West of the Island (owned and run by locals)  – they make a nice bitter and a couple of nice lagers. An Moscow was beer-crazy, loads of nice beers but like many places now a lot of poncey craft beers that are not particularly nice. And like the states they insist on keeping a dark IPA as cold as a lager which kills the flavour a bit.

Just took a a czech bud keg to a friends. It’s very nice indeed, dispite our poor pouring form. Lol

BL the euro beers catch you out that way. You can’t sup them like we do carling etc… The sun doesn’t help either

We intend visiting Bratislava for the day, I’ll remember the warning. It’ll be mid July so should be hot (well what I call hot, I’m sure Ed and Richard would scoff).

My mate went to Belgium for Armistice Day and when he came back he said that he and his lad had been drinking “that beer that you like” and had got horrendously pissed on 6 pints. It was Leffe, 6.6%. Only an Englishman would drink Leffe in pints. Heathen.

It’s brewed in France but follows the German Purity Law. The 4 packs of cans are cheaper, £3.08.

That’s a Dresdener beer, Nolan. Any beers named as German, have to follow the Purity Law. German Braurei are quick to sue.

It may be brewed in Alsace, which has been a German – French yo-yo for centuries.

Its not the temperatures Dave, it is the time it takes to acclimatise.  When you live in the tropics for more than three months your body changes dramatically (in essence you become a bit of a camel and carry more water inside). Going from here to 30 degrees is tough wherever it is!

Incidentally I wanted to add a warning to imbibing wheat beer. It is ‘alive’ and over imbibing can give you a nasty run for your money if you are not used to it!

Wheat beer is for when it’s hot and the beer is cold. Hoegaarden of course, La Trappe Witte (the Dutch Trappist brewery), Blanche de Bruxelles etc. and of course Edelweiss but you don’t see that here.

Making me thirsty. I have some cans of Dead Pony Club in the fridge…

Dave the old town in Bratislava is lovely. I bet you won’t have the problems we did (World Cup qualifier 2002 I think). First night was great – till the end when two of our blokes got shot! One (Man City Fan) was in our hotel (shot throught the leg).  They shut all the pubs the next day (match day) and the only place you could get a beer was Tescos (which had a cafe/bar). The City fan stayed in the hotel lobby all bandaged up (luckily “clean” thigh wound) and everyone gave him some tinnies on the way back from Tescos. He still went to the game and we won 2-1 (Michael Owen).

We were at the Mall this afternoon and popped into M & S. I was amazed to see this on the shelf

                                        Zot!

Tesco have been stocking the Duvel Moortgatt brewery group and Leffe beers for a while but De Halve Maan is a small local family brewey in the middle of Bruges.

I think that I drank that on a holiday to Brugge with SWMBO some years ago, quite nice as I remember it. Oysters, fillet steak and some very nice ice cream on a sweet tart.

                                          I am salivating…

The local beer in Ghent is called Strop and it’s freely available in Bruges cafes. I’m going to try and engineer a photo of sister-in-law next to a bottle because she’s permanently in one. Will have to stay a private family in joke as if I post it on FB I’ll be dead.
