I’g getting the feeling that there are a few Forumites around the NW. How about a get together in, say Manchester, one day. The Old Monkey on Princess Street is not a bad pub, and it would be nice to put faces to names?

Some of us live up North but very certainly don’t come from up North! ?

True, but I guess it feels good not to have to get a bank loan out for a pint up north ? I have been going to a pub a mile or so from me once a week for the past few weeks. They only sell Sam Smiths but it’s a nice drink and listen to this “Not you londoners you may cry” £2.08 a pint 🙂

My local (before I moved) was a Sam Smiths pub. Beer not bad, but Humphrey is a git. On the Friday night the manager returned from a meeting and told me that with immediate effect vaping was banned, I finished my pint, walked across the road, and never went back.

I always go out side to vape but TBH I have never looked into the law on subject. Is it against the law to use one in the pub now or is it breweries discresion?

Discretion. Spoons are the same (but I don’t like Spoons, so no problem). My local where I live now is very vape friendly.

A lot of places have started taking a much more sensible attitude towards it. My Missus vapes for England, mostly at home, but when we have gone out, more and more places just say there’s no need to go outside. Common Sense at work, for once.

There’s a whole Sam Smiths pub in the centre of Bristol, just up the road from the Llandoger Trow where Daniel Defoe supposedly met Alexander Selkirk and said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write of the Admiral Benbow Inn in Treasure Island. It was built at about the same time.

                          It’s too cheap for a website https://www.facebook.com/pages/King-William-Ale-House/135274529836873

Been there loads of times, it’s where the ex Royal Mail escapees usually meet. As you can see from the pictures on FB it’s still proper old fashioned.

When I vapped briefly I’d still go outside to do it. Even though smoking is allowed after 10.30 in my local.

I see it as being curious to the other people in the room. The best thing they did was ban smoking inside places. So I don’t want people vaping inside either. Both horrible. Even though I’m back on about 10 ciggies a week. Sigh.

So glad my son took up vaping instead of the horrible roll ups he smoked. Don’t really like to see him vaping, but the utility room where he used to smoke* does not reek of tars & tobacco anymore.

A conversation with one of his old gf’s, a really heavy smoker :

Me: “Those things will kill you!”    Son’s ex gf:     “I could get hit by a bus crossing the road!”

Me: “Oh really. Would you pay the driver to run you down? That’s what you do when you buy a pack of ciggies, you pay for something to give you a very painful death.”

                              Blank look from son’s ex.

Should explain 2 things. 1 – son once had a large number of exes, after a marriage break up some 17 years ago. He has given up now he’s 50 I think. 2 – I was once a 300+ a week smoker, until my early 30’s. Never touched a ciggy since.

Converts may the worse preachers. My FiL enjoys the life out of me. He always tuns his noes up to the smell of smoke, and like me he was a 40 a day roll smoker untill my wife (at 11) convinced him to stop. At about 30. 30 years later he is like an anti smoking Hitler.

Ive packed in and started again a few times, first time was at 28 for 4 years. I did smoke 40 a day, now down to ten (secret) a week on a bad week. So I don’t moan. I should stop, and will, but I look at it as 10 vs 280 a week is defo an improvement.

If I drink I’ll eat 2mg lozenges.others don’t think they hit the spot, I do, or Atleast the plasebo effect does.

Back to the meet up, if given enough time to get a cheap premier inn (etc) ill have a drive in to enemy tertiary .

Steve, why not put the willpower that got you through RM training, into just saying to yourself “I am going to stop smoking RIGHT NOW and never smoke again? That is what I did at 32 and I have never smoked since. Giving up a bit at a time, and/or using lozenges, does not work. Cold Turkey is the only thing that does. It took me 7 frustrating, maddening weeks before I lost the urge for a smoke, but now I could throw up if I go into a home where a smoker lives. Best thing for me was when they stopped it in public places, including pubs.

Look on it as something you can do for your family: they want you to live as long as possible. I say this after sitting with my dad, big brother (59) FIL and a nephew who was more like a kid brother, and watching them all die of lung cancer. All heavy smokers.

Forty years since I gave up as well. Others smoking still does not worry me, but the worst aspect of giving up is the new-found sense of smell you get. I used to find the smells on London Underground unbearable when an unwashed sweaty armpit was shoved under my nose. Almost made me go back to smoking!

I smoked from about 16 until maybe 30/31. It was easy for me to give up, I was rushed into hospital, that bit I remember, the rest is a hazy, foggy time. I was told my lung function was 20%, in total. Diagnosed with severe asthma. Consultant talked at me then went away. The doctor doing the rounds said ‘smoke again and you’re dead in months’. Never touched one since.

My yearly asthma review, when I was cycling, amazed everyone. lung capacity of an Olympic athlete, allegedly. My next one is due in a few months. I’ll be happy if it’s as good as the last.

Can’t stand the smell of tobacco now, I almost puked when a woman walked past me the other day, strong, musty damp tobacco smell. I also hate the vape odours, some are so sweet they also make me want to puke.

If you want to smoke, please do. Just not around people who hate it. Vape, same. Get completely arsed, dito. I like a good swear, especially when my joints crack. I won’t do it in  a supermarket, will in the legion if there are no women in. Just respect others.

                                      Here endeth the lesson. ?

The wife has COPD and has been on regular checks with the GP. She stopped smoking in May 2015, but substituted it with vaping.

Her last Spirometry ( puff-power ) reading was a 10% improvement on the last. I think that shows the difference between the evils of smoking and ( the lesser evil ) vaping.

Personally, I hated being in the van when she smoked, as I inevitably did too. I don’t have that problem with vaping, ( and yes, she has had some sickly sweet flavours as well, everything from Banana Nut Bread to Apple Pie to Almond Amaretto!! ) I still get the cloud passing in front of my face, but instead of choking , as before, I just try to guess the flavour, and that’s all it is, flavouring.

Please don’t think that I’m trying to convert anybody, I’m just stating it as I see it.

Bob, I think I used it all up back then lol. Thr first time I stopped I went Thr cold turkey route. Lasted 4 years. Them ended up back on them some how. I don’t know why I still smoke about one a day, as I obviously don’t need to! It’s not even one a day. It may be non for 3 days then I’ll have 4 in one day etc…

Since I’ve been away, I’ve had 3 in ten days (feels like a month!) not even halfway through. So I’m to concerned over a few a week. I know zero is better than even one, but I see it as 10 a week is better than my old 40 a day rolls. I still do rolls, proper ciggies I find to dry, always have done.

When I’m out with one of my mate, I’ll happily smoke 20 of his while drinking with him. Mainly as he never had one out of his mouth.

When I stay at his, the wife makes me strip and dump all my cloths into the washer before I go upstairs, As I reek. He is one of only a few people i know that still smoke in their house.

Even when I smoked full time, I’d go out the back. Probably cos of the kids. He doesn’t have any, so suppose he has never had reason to go out side. And cos he is always smoking, he doesn’t smell his house. He would probably come on mine and turn his nose up at the dog smell.

Tbh the dogs only smell in the winter, so the house smells good in the summer, come jan, even I sometime can smell the dogginess of the house. Bathing them only seems to make the house smell worse. So usally it’s only Thr parlour where they bath, before they are cut. About every 6 to 8 weeks.
