Two recent incidents have revealed to the public that the Beeb has degenerated from an independent broadcaster to a mere Government Shill. First they have retracted a David Attenborogh program:
“The BBC has decided not to broadcast an episode of Sir David Attenborough’s flagship new series on British wildlife because of fears its themes of the destruction of nature would risk a backlash from Tory politicians and the rightwing press”
Then however the Right Wing (to whom the Beeb appears wed) really lost their mind when they tried to silence Gary Lineker’s personal criticism of the government asylum policy. All they have now succeeded in doing is to raise a Twitter Storm, and alienate commentators and players alike.
Heavy handed censorship and attempts to stifle debate are not the best way of dealing with valid criticism.
March 11, 2023 at 10:32 am #70588I’m not overly familiar with the Attenborough matter, however I would ask is it really necessary for the BBC (our money) to have 3 highly paid commentators to pass comment on something the viewers have seen seconds previously. Lineker is amongst the most highly paid of the BBC team so I understand and having met him, I can confirm that he was a lovely person. I am not against free speech, far from it but when someone like Lineker makes these comments, irrespective of whether one agrees with them or not, his high profile position as a BBC commentator (though via his own company) cannot be ignored and it is my opinion that for such people their freedom of speech has to be tempered with the employment status upon which their comments might reflect. Unfortunately this is not the first time he has fallen foul of the BBC’s ‘impartiality’ policy. The BBC has a very difficult time in trying to maintain a balanced approach and there is no doubt some ‘hidden’ pressure on it to be ever vigilant and to tow the line – fact of life!! He who pays the piper calls the tune?

Only yesterday I heard the wildlife programme was on tomorrow night, first episode. Is that now pulled? I was not going to watch it, but pity if it is.
Regarding the Linneker thing, this is only fitba, the less of it the better surely! If they just chop him out, together with the rest of his striking supporters, MAYBE my next year’s licence fee could reflect that. No doubt they would keep the fitba (once the players realise they will eventually have to shut up and play on) it can all be done without the commentary.
In fact if the pitch is delineated into little square as right at the beginning of radio fitba reporting, a simple AI prog could keep track of the ball to help those viewers too stupid to watch it themselves.
Just helping keep the balance, I can now get back to listening to music on the radio.
Les.

I maybe more centre-left now but until the long reign of this Administration (post Brown) I was a Conservative supporter.
However what really insensed me was that the Beeb used to be allowed to poke mild fun at everyone and everything – think Spitting Image etc, now anything that remotely upsets the right-wing is heavily censored. Such censorship now goes only in one direction.. For example the Brexit lies of BoJo and actions by Conservative supporters (such as Nadine Dorris’s pack of untruths, or Beeb Chairman Richard Sharp’s loan guarantee to BoJo) go without challenge or punishment. IMO these specific incidents rank as far more impactful and damaging than Linekers puely personal comments in his own Twitter account.
