I at last discovered why I was having trouble. I did not like having to do this, but I enlisted my IT specialist worker grandson. I didn’t like it because I figure he works at it all day, so why bother him after he knocks off? Turns out that a bribe with fish and chips at ours was all it took. “No bother granddad: I actually do very little work like this now, mostly servers, networking and security. It’s a nice break!” He sorted it whilst I fetched the meal. Apparently the problem is that the mobo is too new for Win7, so he installed 10, using the Windows 7 key. Then he also found that the Hdd I had believed a good one, was making a low screeching noise, using his younger ears, and its Hours were well advanced. So I am ordering another and may make it an SSD. He is also getting genuine, latest Win10 ISO’s on USB keys for my PC and my SWMBO’s.
Should have done this at first, I am a stubborn old bugga.
You were right, Dave!

I'm out.September 24, 2019 at 8:09 am #36929No comment 😀 and don’t worry about bothering your grandson, no-one else will and you’ll be the person he most wants to help, especially if there’s a fish supper in it! Seriously Bob it goes with the territory and I’m sure he’s well used to it by now.
You must get an SSD, indeed get an M2 SSD that will plug directly into the motherboard (small screw at one end, it will be in the mobo box). The socket is right next to the graphics card slot, don’t worry it won’t get hot. I’ve just been stress testing a 12 thread monster with an RX570 and the HDD temperature hardly moved.
You can get a Western Digital WDS240G2G0B WD 240 GB for £31 Used loads of those.
September 24, 2019 at 9:38 pm #36960Thanks Dave that looks good, but son’s build has now reached the point where I have it all working and have spent quite a bit on it. A 1TB Seagate spinner and a 4 port front USB panel comes Friday. If he wants an SSD he can buy one, I’ll give him the link you gave here. Grandson actually gave me a mild b****cking for not asking him sooner. 😚 I tend to forget that I have been there for him all the years and his dad has been missing since he was a toddler. Seeing him tomorrow, he has actually taken a day off work and I have yet another parcel for him.
As you probably know from your son, Aspergers takes anything they get involved in right down to nuts and bolts. Well, gson has taken to cooking at home. With Japanese and Korean ingredients, recipes and sauces. That’s why parcels for him with kanji and hanja scripts*, are delivered here in numbers every time he gets another recipe. The power of Gaming contacts: this came about after he was playing online a couple of years ago with some Koreans. This year they started contacting each other in other ways and now he gets recipes from them. Family are all guinea pigs, he invites us over for a meal. Grandma grins and bears it, granddad is learning new tastes and liking (most) of it.🤔😎
He never ceases to confound me nowadays, it’s as if he has matured slowly to one stage and now is opening up to different interests very quickly. At 25.
*Had to look that up!

I'm out.September 24, 2019 at 10:16 pm #36964Mine is 25 in a few weeks. He’s always liked his grub and he’s gone nuts on tea. He’s 200 miles away in Leeds so we don’t see the parcels arriving but judging by what he’s asked for for his birthday it’s from all over the place.
They have a lot in common. Daniel now deals solely with commercial IT infrastructure too, the likes of Aldi in size. Still working his way up to the stuff I did 😉 He’s coming home for his birthday as he shares it with his best mate who’s still in town. It could be interesting where he wants to go for the family meal.
September 25, 2019 at 7:13 am #36971Kimchi dishes are really nice (but you have to like garlic).
Supposedly dishes based on fermented products (Kimchi, Miso, Natto, Yoghurt etc) promote the good guys in your gut which in turn is good for the heart.
September 25, 2019 at 7:23 am #36973Just for fun – Japanese food can also be a near killer as this 60 year old woman found out when she guzzled a load of wasbi thinking it was avocado. link
September 25, 2019 at 2:04 pm #36978Bristol is now awash with Noodle bars, I think it’s no coincidence that they’ve grown in number with the Chinese students.
