Probably of passing interest to all except maybe Steve, but Garmin Watches now feature as the must-have dire emergency backup instrument panel for US Fighter Pilots!
And probably for any future Boeing 737 Max pilots if ever these flying death traps are allowed to get off the ground again by an untrustworthy FAA.
October 24, 2019 at 1:09 pm #37739Cool watch, I’m not sure why this isn’t a think in more watches.
However, the main thing that jumps out to me about the article, is why do all the militery piolets have them? Do they not have faith in thier exteamly expensive equipment!!!
October 24, 2019 at 5:53 pm #37744Short answer is no, they don’t Steve.

I'm out.October 28, 2019 at 4:31 pm #37825Steve, if you read the blurb in the link then you will get an inkling of the issues they face. I would guess that the old issues of cost and weight feature heavily in the ledger books of the manufacturers, suppliers.
Iirc even a non-sparking hammer costs a fortune when done through Government procurement compared with the price that you or I would pay – that of course is the pass-through of the bureaucratic overhead of being able to track everything throughout its life, and the old issues of thrust/weight ratios.
In turn the MoD/DoD mandarins cut back on expense (i.e. stores and maintenance). The bottom line is that the planes are only kept in the air by string and chewing gum, with for example the result that 75% of our Lightening planes are o/c as far as fighting anything real is concerned.
I’m sure Steve still remembers the days of squaddies buying their own kit rather than use the cheap rubbish doled out by the MoD! I suspect that pilots have similar issues of their own – hence Garmin watches.
October 28, 2019 at 4:53 pm #37827I recall ok, but you’d think a mitilmillion pound jets and ejecter systems would have rather great GPS all built in.
October 28, 2019 at 7:16 pm #37830Mate of mine was a Vulcan Tech when I was in AAC: he also complained about MoD cost-cutting even then. At the same time, our AAC Gliding club was entertaining Fast jet fighter pilots at weekends and they were making similar complaints. Kit is kit and always subject to penny-pinching by unCivil Servants. From a Vulcan to an (English Electric) Lightning, through to the £billion Lightning today, it is all at the mercy of these barstewards. Goes all the way back to the 17th Century, I think Cromwell’s New Model Army was the last to be protected from penny-pinching, until Quarter Master Generals were invented and started pinching bits of military expenditure, then expanding their empires, aided and abetted by families buying commissions for their relatives.
Probably explains why Cromwell won so many battles! In N.I many of us Support Arms squaddies, having done Para or other SF training, were drafted onto the streets. We had to take our personal weapon ammunition from our own unit stores and could not have more than ten rounds! In a SLR 24 round mag, or SMG 34 round mag! Paras or RM used to open up the back of a Humber Pig and tell us to help ourselves. Infantry wouldn’t do that, only ones were DLI, or RNF: Geordie lads.
As a Sniper, I had to fight like hell to get enough for classifying 4 times a year. Our Armed Forces don’t need foreign enemies, they already have MoD!
