Had the dressing changed and it’s looking good, so the nurse says.

Have to have it changed every other day now which means going to the out of hours gp service on Sunday.

Also have a carrier bag full of dressings and other stuff, the chemist only had half of the prescription so I’ll get the rest tomorrow.

After many dressing changes and a course of antibiotics the abscess is now getting better instead of not getting worse.

Instead of being 2cm deep it’s apparently now only 1.5cm deep and the edges are healing well, no further sign of infection, which is nice. Still have maybe 10 days worth of bi-daily dressing changes to go, next one is one Saturday at the out of hours GP service at 11.45 am, which if everything goes to plan means I shouldn’t miss any of the last games of the 6 nations.

Glad that is progressing, those things can be a right royal pain to clear up if they get a good grip on you.

Just been to see the nurse again and as I suspected, a minor hiccup has arisen.

Apparently the wound is now over granulating, in other words some of the healing flesh is standing proud and buggering up the final healing phase. So now I have to see the nurse every other day to treat that with silver nitrate. Again, hopefully in a week or so it should be healed.

I thought something was amiss this morning as the area around the wound just didn’t feel right.

Could the contents be used to fill potholes, Nolan? ?

Sorry mate, hope it gets better soon.

Sadly not Bob, a bit of crusty skin and flesh wouldn’t touch most of the ones around here.

Saw a car delivery driver (guessing, it was just one person using trade plates) bounce a brand spanking new (protective plastic wrap still in place on some bodywork panels) MX5 on wafer thin low profile tyres out of a deep pothole in Barry today.  I reckon if the damage was just the tyre the driver was very lucky. I heard the bang 2 cars back.

                          OUCH!

My old and much-missed mate Vic used to come over from Oz every year and stay with us. I had to fetch him from his sister’s and sometimes take him to an airport to catch a Schiphol connection back home. He would not drive in the UK, having been in Oz since we were both 22, hated UK roads. He said that the combination of driving on the left, masses of traffic in small areas, and potholes, put him off. Vic passed away 3 years ago, he would not believe how bad the potholes have become by now, just in that short space of time.

He also drove a Mazda Miata (MX 5 model name in Oz) back home in a small town near Brisbane. ‘Near’ meaning 90 Km away.

Louth town Council, Virgin installers and Lincolnshire Council currently having a 3-cornered argument about one stretch of road entering town. It’s about ¼ mile long: first 100 yards or so is good, then really bad potholes and patches which have become speedbumps. Then about 75 yards of good road, followed by the last stretch which is much worse than the first bad stretch. Drivers are weaving around the deep bits. Atm we have to go in that way, as Virgin are installing along another way into town and there is scaffolding causing a road closure of the only alternative.

You could not make it up: planning is non-existent.

Saw the nurse this afternoon, no need to go back until tuesday unless anything else happens.

Tuesday is just to make sure it’s healed properly and possibly do a minor trim of any excess skin.

Just glad I won’t lose any time with my brother and his kids this long weekend.

Saw the consultant on Thursday. Explained about the increasing pain in my wrists, shoulders, neck and back and also the fatigue. I get knackered doing almost nothing.

My x-rays and scans were checked and my wrists are worn. Not terrible but quite a bit worse than they should be for someone my age. The x-rays were done about 18 months ago and no-one told me about the damage. ?

Had bloods done to see if any thing explains the fatigue and should get the results in a week or so.

Abscess is still in the healing phase, very near but not there yet. Hopefully after next week no more bearing my arse in the nurses room at the surgery. The nurse told me that there is a lot of abscesses in men in the age range of about 25-50 in the arse area, lots need surgery and nobody really knows why.

An American friend of mine has been pushing the benefits of Vitamin K2 (MK7 variety as found in Japanese Natto and Miso). He has been specifically pushing it for cardio related problems as it has been shown to mobilise cholesterol out of the blood into bones. I see that it is now being looked at by Arthritis Research Groups as well. link

MK7 is not cheap ~£25/month, but it is harmless and overdosing is not an issue. Smaller amounts of MK7 are also present in French Brie. (Apart from Japan France has the lowest rate of cardio deaths according to WHO – link)

Note MK7 is fat soluble, so pills MUST be taken together with something fatty e.g. yoghurt, cheese or similar.

Finally, all clear on the arse wound. I have an ‘open appointment’ with the nurse for the next month, in other words if something goes wrong with it, get in touch with her and she’ll see me the same day.

Interestingly the nurse said not to bother trying to make an appointment through reception or online as it won’t be the same day, instead I was to ask reception for a call back from the nurse and then she’d sort it herself.   Apparently the nurse can override the appointment making computer system they have.

If you can; ask for a copy of the Blood Test results. I’m not sure whether Wales has the same Blood Form as this area, but if you check any results with an exclamation mark then google the test you may well find some that may have a bearing on your problem that you can discuss with your GP.

The MCV, MCH, MCHV and MPV results may be of interest and have a bearing on arthritis and nerve pains . Some can indicate a simple vitamin deficiency that may be aggravating your problem.

A folic acid or vitamin B12 deficiency can have quite wide knock-on impacts and may be caused by your diet.  For example. UK Doctors tend to overlook folic acid as they assume that everyone eats breakfast cereals or shop bread that have been dosed with sufficient folic acid to meet your RDA. If like me you shun that source then it can throw your bloods quite out of wack .

Thanks Ed, I have to take a folic acid pill 3 times a week, starting on Thursday. My methotrexate is taken on Tuesday. Not sure why it’s important to leave it that long but allegedly it is.

I would question the GP re methotrexate and folic acid. Manylinks cite very positive benefits of taking folic acid WITH folic acid as metotrexate destroys folic acid which is bad news for arthritis.
