Nolan I apologise very much for the crap comments I made. There is no excuse, but at the time I was in deep pain and discomfort. I really should not take things out on people I have come to regard as friends. Please accept my apology in the spirit it is meant.
Ed and Richard, thank you for your words. Sympathy is definitely not what I want or need: there is one distant cousin whose words drip from the phone like treacle. She means well, but …..

I'm out.June 14, 2021 at 4:48 pm #68270Bob, no need for an apology. I thought it would be something like that.,
The fact that you offered one just proves that you’re a good bloke.
Take care.
February 22, 2022 at 7:01 pm #69219Finally got to see the hip surgeon today.
Not good news. The hoped for salvage surgery is a non starter.
It’s either carry on as I am until the pain gets to much or go on the waiting list to have the full hip replacement surgery, about 18 months ATM.
I’m currently leaning towards the carry on as I am option as I know what I’m dealing with and the surgery has some risks for me, minor but higher than most people.
There’s also my age to factor in, the surgeon said that he didn’t like doing replacements on people my age due to the wear that will happen and the further surgery involved. His preferred age range is 70+ as ‘that will probably see them out’.
Lots of reading and thinking to be done over the next few weeks….
February 23, 2022 at 8:38 am #69221Been there with my ankle, they waited 19 years to replace it due to my age. Things were so bad I had to hire a scooter to go shopping with the family. But there are no second shots with an ankle, it’s a one time replacement only, so I can see why.
That was 10 years ago and it’s transformed my life beyond all description, both in mobility but especially the lack of pain. Unfortunately the ankylosing spondylitis is undoing that but hey ho. I get x-rayed annually and the replacement still looks like the day it went in.
February 23, 2022 at 7:26 pm #69223Dave, 19 years is a LONG time to wait. That sucks.
My fibromyalgia pain is often as bad, sometimes worse, than the hip pain. And it’s getting worse quicker than the hip is. That isn’t going to change no matter which route I choose.
It’s a tough choice with no clear winner, either option could turn out to be the best.
May 10, 2022 at 9:27 am #69520Had a letter today giving me a date for a pre op assessment early next month. For what it doesn’t say.
It’s either my hip or shoulder. Hip I find hard to believe , not been on the waiting list long. Shoulder is less likely as I haven’t seen a surgeon yet!
Pointless trying to get information from the GP, I was recently forcibly moved as my surgery shut. The new one has systems in place to frustrate you every step of the way.

I share your frustration. I too have had a GP practice merger thrust on me, which caused at least two good GPs to retire, and turned a slick user friendly IT based system into a heap of American carp. No doubt the partners in the practice made out but the patients certainly did not! The unannounced Conservative policy of ‘privatisation through the backdoor’ stinks!
May 12, 2022 at 8:58 am #69524My GP practice has been the property of the practice owners since I arrived here in 1992, 30 years ago. Though the partners have changed over the years, and the original building has been doubled in size with a recent addition being completed in the early days of Covid, their biggest issue has been obtaining staff, especially doctors. Since Blair’s contracts, most GPs work only limited part-time hours, and many retire early to avoid tax on pension conflicts. They now have several pharmacists who do not dispense, but do routing prescription issuing and repeat dispensing re-authorising. Dispensing is still the role of the privately owned chemist/pharmacists, of which there are two in the village sized ‘town’, almost opposite each other in the one ‘main’ street, in real terms little more than a cart track wide, one way street. Generally neither my wife nor I have too many issues, the electronic requests for prescriptions are treated exceptionally quickly, though manual requests or ‘specials’ can take longer.
I sympathise with those having arthritis problems, my wife has lupus and arthritis, and I have increasing trouble with arthritis, it makes typing troublesome, especially since I have restarted to have numbness in my left arm and hand. Rheumatologists are rumoured to exist, my wife has only waiting 18 months to get her 6 weeks time follow-on appointment. My referral to them was met by no room at the inn, or was it at the hospital?
