Aquatic Ape

I do not know if anyone remembers the books by Desmond Morris. In one of these, “The Naked Ape”, he postulated that based on things such as the streamlined arrangement of body hair that humans originated as ape-like creatures that foraged on the foreshores of coastal areas.  Based on the recent discovery that Neanderthals suffered from ‘swimmers ear’, he may well have been correct. I was also reminded of the Time Team ‘ excavation  of the footprints of a Stone Age family on an ancient foreshore at Goldcliff near Magor on the Severn Estuary.’

The more recent human discoveries I read, it seems to me that the ‘ Out of Africa ‘ theory becomes less likely. Instead we should be looking for remains off shore in the ancient Euphrates estuary in the Arabian Gulf as that area is the nexus for most of these discoveries.

Very interesting Ed, I had seen the Severn footprints before but the Ars Technica link is challenging. I predict lots of Archaeologists and Historians harrumphing over that. I am actually extremely hairy, as were my dad and both brothers. I also have some small bone spurs, with associated ear trouble. There was a Professor Williams who wrote a book called “When Was Wales”. The guy is the image of my dad and he said that his ancestors probably met the first Celts when they reached the coast of Britain.

I don’t like to speculate based upon that, but ….

I’m just waiting for Putin to declare that the first modern humans evolved in what became Russia. In which case I believe in devolution.

Ed, as somebody that is very interested in the ‘undiscovered’ bipedal hominids, think Bigfoot/Sasquatch (and loads of other names from the tribes that used to encounter them) to the  Orang Pendek (and everything in-between) that’s really interesting.

There are many accounts of Bigfoot beside rivers/lakes and also lots of them where they seem to be harvesting sea food such as clams. There are a few where they have been seen swimming. Japanese macaques hang out in hot springs so why wouldn’t other  hominids, ancient or living.

That number is expected to revise upwards with Global Warming. Looks like our Lincolnshire population will be an island people by the turn of the century. In a few thousand years, maybe our descendants will have developed gills! We will swim with the dolphins…

I really should curb my imagination.?
