Both of those are brilliant, cracked up, spilled my coffee, missed the KB though.

          I am not amused!

Many Americans look back on Ray-Guns’ Administrations as the Golden Years. He and Thatcher were very close. Same people (and their descendants) think the Trumper is the Greatest.

Go figure, as they say over the pond.

I was in the US during that period, and Ronald Reagan was revered as their version of Royalty. In other words they realised that he was just a figure head but they trusted his advisors and liked his ability to talk tough.

The Americans I knew were quite upset at the European contempt for him.

Being a bit young at the time, to be in the know, I always thought he was seen as a good present.

Though him and Nancy’s did have a hard on about drugs. Even though the industry was propping up floridas economy.

Trump is crazy, but I like a bit a crazy when it’s not running my country. He is sort of against some of my more socialist leaning views, but in all honesty, I think he is more left leaning them them around him, so in a way I think it could be worse for them if he wasn’t there.

It’s a bizarre set up. Sometimes I like what he says, as it’s so left field (not political left, just bat shit left), then sometimes the shit he says is just metal bat shit. Either way, its all fun for me. If I didn’t watch him, I’d only have to look at TM and brixit. So I’d welcome a bit of comedy if I’m honest.

The main thing I don’t like, is the way the world is swinging form centre politics to right wing. I honestly think Trump is actually keeping gov more centred that it would like to be. Which as a statement seems metal, but I think true. TM would love I think to swap roles with him.

However we (as a globe)  do seem to reverting back to insular politics in a time where boarders should be falling. Imaginary Boarders in the future are going to be our downfall.

Reagan and Thatcher were always banging the war-drum and egging one another on. Reagan even started his re-election campaign by announcing he was going to order the nuking of the Russians within 5 minutes! link

Things got close to World War III at one point (Able Archer), and the UK Government built even more funk-holes for the Establishment (RSGs). The late 70s through the early 80s was a very edgy period. At one point I seriously considered emigrating to Australasia for the safety of my family, as the West seemed to be governed by a bunch of crazy war mongers.

I always thought that Reagan was much more intelligent than believed by those who laughed at his ‘gaffes’. He used and understood irony much more than 95% of his fellow Americans. He is one of only two presidents who made the Cold War Soviets back down and need a toilet break, the other being JFK. Between RR and Maggie, the Soviet Bloc was utterly confused most of the time. The seemingly ‘warmongering’ POTUS Reagan, actually forced the Soviets into more and more miliary spending, which brought about their economic collapse and the ultimate downfall of the Soviet Union.

I believe this was the result of a programme carried out by the US government, with the help of the UK and others, with the aim of bringing about that collapse.

When I served a total of 7¾ years in BAOR, we Brits and other NATO troops believed that we would not survive long, should the USSR and allies attack. Had we but known, even in the 70’s, most of their armour and vehicle mobility was hampered by poor maintenace and breakdowns. Their rank and file were all conscripts, mainly from poor areas. We were a small, but professional, regular Army, and we believed that we would only slow them down, but we also believed that we did not want them to get past us in strength. In short, without saying it out loud, we were prepared to take as many with us as we could.

Long term history will be able to judge after all the secret documents are released – but I reckon we were very lucky to survive that period.

It was a pity that political and venal greed screwed up the tremendous potential that existed after the fall of the Berlin wall.

True words, Ed. “swords into ploughshares” just did not happen. The ‘swords’ just became more powerful and those who sold them became obscenely wealthy by selling them to the highest bidder, irrespective of the bidder’s intentions or Human Rights reputation.
