I’m in Warrington, about midway between Liverpool and Manchester. Tracking info on a parcel. Despatched from Manchester 2.52am. Arrived in Liverpool 5:35 am. Out for delivery from Liverpool 8:32 am.  It seems strange that during the night it’s gone right past me to be sent back again.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

Did you really want them knocking on your door at 4am?? ??

It’s probably down to delivery areas, certain postcodes delivered via certain depots – don’t look for logic, it was designed by humans!!?

When I dabbled in logistics Liverpool was the preferred depot location as it was cheap! At the time it was also well placed to service most of the Midlands and North. It wasn’t a bad location for the whole of the UK though I gather Swindon now wears that crown.

Work colleague ordered a package for delivery in Bolton. It left Trafford and went to Preston before coming back to Bolton, so same deal!

But, but, but – Trafford is around the corner from Bolton (I used to live there and worked in Trafford). It would have been quicker to collect it himself.

Don’t know about parcels but because of the unions all Oxford mail is now sorted & dispatched from Swindon.

On an other note regarding Amazon. I put a CD in the cart ready to checkout this morning. I added it to the cart at about 9pm last night at a cost of £28.98. I decided I still really wanted at 5am this morning and decided to proceed with the check out. Luckily just before I did so I noticed the price had shot up to £69.98. Now that was a crafty try by Amazon. There was no warning, no nothing and if I had not have had a strong coffie prior I would of missed it and proceeded.

The parcel might never have actually been in the locations at all. DPD tracking shows where they expect the parcel to be, not where it actually is (apart from when it’s out for delivery). Amazon might do something similar. It could also just be a glitch in the system.

Is what they’re doing any different to the post office – if I want to send a letter to a person in the same town where I live, post, collect – trip to Chester – sorted, trip back to North Wales to my local sorting office and then delivery.

Don’t forget mail isn’t sorted by people but by machines. Bloody huge great big machines. Parcels go to hubs which these days can be highly mechanized too.

It done this way because it’s more efficient, whether you believe that or not is up to you, but it’s a fact. The Swindon site is huge (and there’s a lot more than the Mail Centre there) but it’s nothing compared to the Parcelforce Coventry hub.

It is not generally known, but my adopted county of Lincolnshire has four postcodes. In the north, North & Northeast Lincolnshire share Doncaster’s code of DN. Here in Lincoln, West Lindsey and my area of East Lindsey, with a few adjoining areas, It’s LN. Down south, towards Cambridgeshire, it’s PE for Peterborough. Closer to the Nottinghamshire border, around the towns close to the Trent as county border it’s NG. It gets even weirder when Retford, Notts., is listed as PE.

Please don’t get me started on STD dialling codes within Lincs. That is even more confusing.
