      For a number of years I have used AlwaysSync to back-up files between the PC and an external HDD. Various spot checks have always indicated that this was working – until today.  I only had about twenty files to back-up so I fired AlwaysSync up and hit the update button.  Whilst it was doing its stuff I looked at the list of files being transferred and noticed one was missing.  It was on the PC (obviously) but not on the external HDD.  Several times I ran the prog. with no success.  In the end I used Windows copy/paste to do the job.

      The problem is “how many more have not been transferred.”?  I am pretty sure that there is another one missing so tracking that down is a job for tomorrow.

      Has anyone had similar problems with AlwaysSync?  What alternatives can you recommend?

        Use Windows own.

          I bought a copy of SyncbackPro years ago and it works great. There’s a free version that does the job for just USB drives. I also use FreeFileSync regularly as it’s cross platform.

            Thanks both.  I think I found the problem.  I had only ticked “copy new files only” so modified files were being ignored.  Now it copies<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”> all</span> changed files whether new or modified.  Strictly speaking the result is a bit dodgy to use as an archive because files “in error” (ie modified unintentionally) will get copied and overwrite the original backup.  Still, with a bit of care I should be OK and if everything goes TU then I can smartly whip out the USB lead and stop mass transfers  :wacko: .

                Is there an option for keeping versions?

                That’s part of the benefit of both Freefilsync and Syncback is that it can save versions of data so when you update the initial copy, it saves a version of the changed (or deleted files).
