It’s chucking it down. Not drifting like it did last time.

It’s supposed to continue all day.
Son is due to go back to Bath later. Trains still running but the local buses in Bath are operating on “main roads” only. The biggest problem is outside of the centre you have to go up massive hills and he will need to to get home. I suspect we will have a house guest tonight too.
March 18, 2018 at 8:18 am #17846The thermometer now says minus 0.1 which is ‘cool’, just not in the fashion sense! However, it is the wind that will really get you. A wind proof garment and a layer or three below that will be needed in most areas today, even taking the recycling to the bin at the side of the house was not really a shirt sleeve activity.
At least the snow was a bit feeble and apart from dusting the outside car and a bit on the grass, most appears clear of ice ad snow.
Warning, some areas will certainly have some ice and probably snow as well so care is essential.
John, I hope that your pipes have survived so far, our boiler drip pipe froze, backed up and shut down the boiler until I cut the pipe and ran a relief pipe. I have now set in a new set up, I hope that your repaired set up is going to be more weather proof. This weather should not last as long as mark 1.
March 18, 2018 at 8:18 am #17847Same story here, usually have a bit of a drive on a Sunday morning when it’s nice and quiet, turned around and came home.
Main roads were getting covered but it was early (7am).Side roads are mostly covered with about 2cm of snow. Nothing has been gritted, not even major roads like Penarth Road which had a light dusting.

In conditions like those, better a house guest for another night than some of the alternatives, from what you said you might have your guest for the whole day. ‘Out west ‘ when it decides to snow the weather does like to show off and hang onto the white stuff a bit too long. After one historic late snow storm I heard there were accounts of ‘harvesting’ snow and ice from the moors to cool summer drinks in June or July. I guess that was before refrigerators become common place.
March 18, 2018 at 9:57 am #17854It’s still snowing heavily here but it’s just wet enough to not stick. In fact it’s melting the stuff on the ground already
March 18, 2018 at 10:30 am #17855Woke up to about 2 1/2 inches of the white stuff on the ground this morning (Solihull) and it doesn’t show any signs of going away yet.
March 18, 2018 at 4:50 pm #17862About 9am I drove up to mum’s just to see how the roads were, I checked first which routes Cardiff Bus were operating, which turned out to be all of them with some diversions due to abandoned cars, very steep hills and the like. Not a problem if you have a brain that works.
Everything is freezing now, just cleared my carc of icicles and the last of the snow, due to have another lump tonight which will probably freeze solid. One neighbour came out and asked why I was bothering, I gave up trying to talk sense to him years ago. He’ll have a shock tomorrow when he attempts to clear his work van, 3 layers of snow and ice on it at the moment so maybe another 2 layers tomorrow morning. He usually leaves about 6.30am, going to be damn cold then. ?
March 18, 2018 at 5:39 pm #17864It is already freezing and snowing here. I thought about clearing the car a short while back, but the ice is already formed. I need to go out tomorrow to take my wife for an urgent check up with the quack but not until 10:16. If it is too iced up I can dig, (figuratively dig) the other car out of the garage and use that, but I do not like using the new one on short, cold runs.
March 18, 2018 at 11:51 pm #17865We had a light dusting last night, so I was tempted to let my brother know, as it was his daughter’s christening today. I left it though, as it was a bit late. Woke up this morning to a few inches and blocked roads. None of us thought to move the cars either ?
Luckily enough, most people made it, and they had a great day.
March 19, 2018 at 7:53 am #17866Tippon, I am glad it all went well. Last night things were warming up nicely and at one point it was positive so I though that today would see and end to all the mess and botheration. However, when I got up it was still in negative territory though it does now appear to be warming up a whole 0.2 degrees and still there is snow ande ice to move a little later.
March 19, 2018 at 10:44 am #17869Woke up this morning to the sound of thr boiler doing its thing. So the house must of dropped below 14 in the night.
No fresh snow last night, just the same few patches left that didn’t melt yesterday. Given it’s still on zero outside, they will probably be there tomorrow also.
Hurry up spring.
March 19, 2018 at 10:56 am #17870Fresh layer of snow on my car this morning, all but gone now. Still cold though.
March 19, 2018 at 11:26 am #17872The winds are bitter but at least this time the snow has all but left, not quite the same in Devon from the news reports. Thing are a bit rough down there. I was shocked how black the crust on the remaining bit of snow had become over night before I swept it off to take my wife to the quack.
March 19, 2018 at 11:52 am #17874Our boiler is starting to play up. (cretinous design has a fan sitting in the exhaust gas stream – mms out in fixing and the damned bearings fail i.e replace every couple of years). Now got fingers crossed that it will survive until the fan can be replaced – as usual two call-out charges – bah!
March 21, 2018 at 8:12 am #17946Well I trust that your fan kept running OK, it was another chilly one last night, warmer now, but it went down to -3 at one or two points and we had another heavy frost this morning.
March 21, 2018 at 4:58 pm #17960Beautiful day here today, just taken SWMBO out to exercise the new hip for a couple of hours. Thought I would have to get her on my back to get her home. Her feet are playing up now.
Think I may have to visit the local blacksmith for her new shoes. What do think of these?

I'm out.March 21, 2018 at 7:54 pm #17968They are very stylish but the gold is very soft so will wear out too quickly unless faced with a harder metal. Also gold is heavy so walking would be a chore.
After a cold night here the day was almost warm and was very bright so not a bad day all round. I even did a microscopic bit of garden and plant work.
March 22, 2018 at 4:07 pm #17992Hadn’t thought of the Gold being soft and wearing out Richard, you are right. Maybe Aluminium, she would probably thank me for the lighter weight. Academic anyway: missus has beat me to it by buying a new pair of trainers. They won’t last…
Thermometer going up and down here today. This morning and up to 2 pm, lovely sunshine, 12°c. 2 hours of no sun, heavy cloud, very cold wind, down to 5°c in no time. Now sun is out and the glass is climbing again. Daft weather.

I'm out.March 22, 2018 at 5:34 pm #17997The window cleaner knew all about it today. He took off his windcheater and the clouds came over so the temperature dropped. He put the covers back on went up the latter, the clouds parted and he overheated. He could not win. At 17:30 it is a shade under 9 degrees.
