Lee, one to start off your new Maker section.
Today, even the simplest child’s toy comes equipped with a load of sensors, motors, battery boxes, speakers etc. Unfortunately they are not built to either last or repair. In the next few weeks probably 50% of Xmas toys (and decorations) will go t-up. When they reach that point, do not just sling them in the Council recycling bin, rip ’em apart and salvage all the stuff for your own (or elder child’s) use.You may even find that one or two can be repaired by a dab of solder.
Gears and motors are potential robot components, as too are sensors such as light detectors. Speakers add media output capabilities, while LEDs have decorative use at least. Things such as resistors and condensers etc are ubiquitous, while battery boxes should be coveted as every project will need one.
I have no claim to originality for this tip, but it may be a timely one during the next couple of months.
