Different ball game, but I always remember the great man who taught his teams that the Referee is always right: Brian Clough. He would never allow players to argue with a referee and the result was that Nottingham Forest were fairly treated by refs. At least in the UK.
I am aware that it does not happen in Rugby, but what really p****s me off about the spherical-ball game, is the way that players surround match officials and dispute a decision, even in the lower Leagues. This seems to be getting worse every season and must have a detrimental effect upon children watching. Mr. Clough had been known to substitute a player who disrespected a match official. It does nothing for the team involved, must the official involved in the frame of mind tolook upon them with disfavour.
I think that many of the most popular sports are suffering from too much outside influence, including “Trial by TV”. Right or wrong views of an official’s decision should be disregarded and sport should go back to taking the official’s decision as final. Over a season or a tournament, it evens out.
Unless you are NFFC in Europe, up against a corrupt official: http://tinyurl.com/hx6pwrx
Now that’s a ref (and EUfa) to complain about! We never won again in Europe. How can that ever be correctly punished?

I'm out.February 14, 2018 at 4:52 pm #16859Howley has his opinion, and it’s a far more knowledgeable opinion than a lot of other people’s but it’s still just his opinion.
No one can tell what would have happened in the game after that try. Apart from Wales would have been 5 points closer if not 7. That would probably have changed the whole attitude of the teams.
I don’t know which incident Dave is referring to re a forward pass so I won’t comment on that.
Yes teams get done over by the ref/TMO but the incidents I’ve seen recently were close calls, this wasn’t. It was clearly a try. If it was a 50/50 call or even 60/40 then I’d probably have forgotten it by now. Again, it wasn’t. This has been shown by the statement.
Dave, I’ll get over it at my own pace, thanks.
No more comments from me on the match in question, my position is clear as is the position of Dave and I’ve no wish to fall out over what is after all only a game. (Albeit a bloody important one!!!)
February 14, 2018 at 7:24 pm #16861I don’t understand how you can still be mad days later. It’s just a game. I’m usually over the game by the time I get home.
As bob said above I do wish footballers respected the refs life the rugby guys do. I’d introduce instant reds for anyone, bar the captain, address the ref with out being asked to. It would solve the issue in one weekend, would be open shut case to rule on.
Within a year or so, crowding the ref would be seen as antiquated as two footed 50 50s are today.
Back to the rugby, good luck to all. I don’t have a dog in the fight.
February 15, 2018 at 5:33 pm #16871Wish FIFA and EFA would read and act upon this:
” I’d introduce instant reds for anyone, bar the captain, address the ref with out being asked to. It would solve the issue in one weekend, would be open shut case to rule on. ”
Absolutely! I don’t know about “only a game” though Steve. Bill Shankly* gave that memorable quote – ” Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don’t like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that. ”
Football. Full of mad dedicated Jocks.??
*From Cloughie’s biography, one of only two other managers he respected. The other was Bobby Robson.
Great result against Porto Steve, I watched it. Although they could have gone two goals down in the first 10 minutes, must have realised it was serious and played some great football. It’s been a while since we had 5 English teams clubs in the Euro’s at this stage.

I'm out.February 15, 2018 at 8:50 pm #16875The game turned out well, though it was a boring 5 goal win. Yes I know how entitled that sounds. But it was so dull. The spurs game was great lived that one.
I’ll call time one the footy talk for now, as it will anger the rugby folk.
February 15, 2018 at 9:15 pm #16876Understood.

February 16, 2018 at 11:59 am #16878The best innovation for rugby was the 10minute ‘sin-bin’. I wish they would bring it in for yellow card offences in football, it would soon eliminate some of the most cynical ‘accidental’ fouls.
February 23, 2018 at 8:02 pm #17059France V Italy, I’m going for France by 10, maybe as much as 20 if Italy fall apart early on.
February 23, 2018 at 8:51 pm #17063Scotland 8 – England 43 women at 69 minutes and a classic quote on BBC:
” Danielle Waterman with more gas than a dairy herd on a lentil diet. ”
At half time the France men’s team struggling, only leading 11-7. Dai, Italia!

I'm out.February 24, 2018 at 3:01 pm #17081Too close to call at half time, but Sexton’s kicking is off. May be Wales can do us a favour.
February 24, 2018 at 3:04 pm #17082Way to many errors by Wales, Ireland aren’t immune from them either. Amount of penalties given away by Wales so far is daft.
More discipline by Wales and it’s game on.
February 24, 2018 at 4:11 pm #17084Gutted. Wales could just have snatched a draw, stupid attempt at the long over the top pass.
I’m amazed we were so close, the amount of penalties and errors by Wales was ridiculous.
February 24, 2018 at 4:29 pm #17085Lots of being nice to the Scots in the build up, but it’s only going one way.
February 24, 2018 at 4:34 pm #17086Realistically Dave, yes. I just hope the Scots put up a fight and make a game of it.
February 24, 2018 at 5:32 pm #17088Well they are certainly doing just that!
February 24, 2018 at 5:34 pm #17089Damn right.
Fair play to them, looks like they have the spirit that nearly beat the All Blacks back.
February 24, 2018 at 6:40 pm #17093Wish I was in Edinburgh tonight, it will be a hell of an atmosphere.
Should have put £50 on Ireland back at the start ?
February 24, 2018 at 6:57 pm #17094Fair play to Scotland, hell of a game.
I don’t think anyone would have called that margin. I honestly don’t care that they are ahead of Wales in the table, we should claw that back in the last 2 games.
February 24, 2018 at 10:13 pm #17098Well done Scotland, now my Scots Gt-nephew will be giving me some stick. I don’t really mind, they deserved it, England beaten by a better team on the day. Also beaten by errors and inability to concentrate IMO.
I fully expected Wales to beat the Irish though and they came close. Two good games.
