To save opening a computer to test/format/partition etc an HDD, I purchased one of these.
To use on my Sata 250GB WD HDD.
When I turn it on the monitor display goes quivery.
At first it showed C D E F partitions with Windows installation on C and everything on the other partitions. Whats on when I took the 250GB out of a PC
I went into Disk Management and clicked on the drive, I got a message
Initialise Disk – using MBR I clicked OK (also tried with GPT)
The request couldn’t be permormed because of an I/O device error.
When I click OK the disk has gone from Computer Management.

If I turn off the the HDD and start again, it goes through the above.
If I right click on the disk everything is blanked out.

I know this Sata 250GB was working fine.
Is it the HDD to USB (above) fit for the purpose,
Cheers
JohnJune 25, 2018 at 12:36 am #22267I don’t like the sound of the quivering display. It could well be a problem with the adapter PSU. Can you try powering the drive from your PC to test this ?
June 25, 2018 at 7:39 am #22271Thanks Graham
I will try with PC power, I have no spare plugs being commercial PCs, but I think I have a coupler some where.
Cheers
JohnJune 25, 2018 at 8:04 am #22272Brilliant Graham
Using PC power it worked fine and I was able to use Disk Management as needed.
I need to see about changing it, not sure I maybe I will have to contact the seller and explain.
Cheers
JohnJune 25, 2018 at 8:41 am #222733 posts sos, If only we could edit a post after 5mins.
There didn’t seem a point of contact so I returned it (to be collected by Hermes)
I need to re look for another type, any suggestions welcome.
Much appreciated Graham for the suggestion

JohnJune 25, 2018 at 9:56 am #22276I bought two versions of these some time ago, one similar to yours, which has sat in the drawer and been used once and an HDD docking station. That has turned out to be the most useful addition for dealing with odd HDD’s of all shapes and sizes.
THIS is the one I got, came out in 2012/13 and THESE are what is around at the moment. On Amazon, if you look closely in the spiel, they say when the item first came to market – that way you won’t be buying outdated stuff.
June 25, 2018 at 4:16 pm #22281You are welcome John. Better luck with the next one ?
June 25, 2018 at 7:02 pm #22291Thanks JayCee
Many moons ago I had the all in 1 docking station, I didn’t find it worked when I needed it,
that mainly was IDE. I evensearched the house down before the one above. I was going to give it another go,I must of put it in the bin.I will probe the other link, I may end up with a docking station again.
Hope for better luck Graham.
Cheers
JohnJune 25, 2018 at 7:52 pm #22292I will go for a docking station off JayCee’s link, as you say useful addition for dealing with odd HDD’s.
I have a few old ones, maybe redundant now.

JohnJuly 7, 2018 at 9:32 pm #22789I eded up getting one of these off JayCeeDee post.
The original purpose is working fine. I then went to find the IDEs, where are they? I will have to check out the SD readers.
Cheers
JohnJuly 8, 2018 at 1:13 am #22797John, I sent you a SATA/IDE to USB powered adaptor similar to the Storite, about the same time as I sent the external hard drive.
I now use a couple of Startech External SATA docks. Only suitable for 2.5″ drives & are powered using a ‘Y’ USB cable from two ports. These do all my backups & testing of drives. If you use a USB hub it will need a power supply.

For the odd 3.5″ drive that I need to check out I have a Sharkoon SATA dock which has an external power supply & also various ports as well as a card reader.

July 8, 2018 at 8:00 am #22803Roger I still have and use them, they are round the back of my Desk and used for my backups.

I never swap the HDD (it’s sealed) I power up when backing up and power down till next time. I needed one round the front for quick access when I need to quickly partition/format a drive. It’s now in the drawer till needed (plug & play-then away) just for testing purposes not continuous use.

JohnJuly 10, 2018 at 12:46 am #22934IIRC the external hard drive had it’s own power supply & connected to the PC via USB.
The SATA/IDE adaptor is a separate device to connect a bare hard drive to the PC so shouldn’t be needed with the external hard drive …. unless you are saying that you have a second HDD connected using the adaptor.
Either way, I’m not having a dig. they are yours to do with as you wish, even sell if you want to … just reminding you that you should have an adaptor to connect bare HDDs with out having to buy one.

July 10, 2018 at 1:40 am #22938I know no digging, I was just proud to show it still going. The picture was to show I can’t get at it for a temp use HDD.
I would have to fetch the HDD out the case (undoing the screws) to use it for another, then back again.
So I am looking at another, for quick use, leaving my TB backup as is.
Cheers
