      See Link.

I heard about on the radio but thought nothing of it then while cleaning up I came across my old coin box. Half penny’s, big 1 pennys, circa 1916 and so on. How ever the first coin I pull out is the above mentioned 2p “New pence”. I have not looked but I am sure I’ll have more. I never use copper. It just goes in a box. It will be interesting to see if those sell on eBay.

But to be honest I simply am not that lucky. Seems to easy for me.

Looked in eBay and there are a few for silly money but in general they seem to be going for nothing so I guess it’s people trying there luck. I have 5 just from change from the past weekend and probably loads more in my copper box so there not that rare.

Got some old pennies back to 1800’s, but they are making nothing unless practically Mint. I do have a 1983 pack of Uncirculated Decimal Coinage though, all Mint, including a Halfpenny coin. Not everyone knows that the ½ penny was still minted and in circulation until 1984, which means my Mint ½P is one of the last. Photos:

I also have a £5 coin celebrating the 1947 – 1997 Golden Wedding of (then) Princess Elizabeth to Phil The Greek:

Not very complementary, is it? 200 years ago the designer would have been beheaded.

My dad was a coin collector his whole life, he had them all,  all the old rare ones, and full collections in wallet folders. Plus lots of random ones he thought would be worth something someday due to run lengths and even misprints.

His brother collected stamps in the same way.

Sadly my dad blended his days a penniless (ironically) drunk, when I searched his place (on Cardiff) the had long gone, as his Omega watch anything else worth selling.

Sad to see what addiction to do. A once ex-para, Falklands vet, excellent cabinet maker, Teetotal till 29 and dead by 42!

It’s a bizarre feeling to surpass (or almost) your father’s innings. Most will hit that around mid 60s and up, not early 40s.

Worst part is, he was very house proud, our house groumg up was like a palace, (on the inside, the area rough as..), so he would of come in really handy over the last ten years.

Steve, I had heard some of your  story before, but the more complete account does make sad reading. I suspect we have all lived long enough to know some who have fallen, been pushed or perhaps even jumped through the net in that or a similar way. However, it is not the same when they were someone who was very closely related.

A mate of mine went that way. Spent too long in the Army (iCorps) imo, as when he came out he had been institutionalised for most of his life and was like a duck out of water. Soon turned to booze, and died from a blood vessel bursting in his throat. At that time (late eighties) there was very little post service support for settling back into civi life.

This is my coin box and two out of six 2p coins I picked out were 1971 new pence. Can’t be that rare. I think it’s fake news to attract people to the website.

I just googled and it seems if the 2p coin is 1983 but it says New Pence on it rather than Two Pence then it might sell for a few hundred pounds.

Yes I had seen that. Not looked though at my coins but the 83 one’s seem to be only £’s on ebay unless I am not looking correctly. One thing for sure is if you want to build up some feedback on fleebay sell some coin’s such as these 2 New Pence. Although tin hat theory I’ll put money on fleebay indirectly coming up with these Ideas of story line’s.

Most of the common coins on eBay only seem to command scrap value – even the old silver joeys of Christmas Pudding fame are only worth scrap silver prices. I think you probably need uncirculated mint coins to get anything like the rumoured couple of hundred pounds for modern coins.

Ed, don’t coin collectors have their own way of expressing the condition of coins? Unless it is something truly unique and sought for that reason alone, the slightest imperfection, which an ordinary observer may not even see, can decimate any potential value. Unless you are really clued up you are almost certain to get done.

Steve that’s a sad, sad story about your dad. As has been said, we read some of it before, but I also recall that you suffered some problems with him. Having an abusive parent (mam) I know that song only too well. Didn’t drink until 29, then alcoholic? Would that have been after the Falklands? Probably PTSD, I have two mates who stayed on after I left, said that was a short but horrible war. Being REME REMF’s (US Forces lingo) they were set to burial parties. One of them was badly affected by that. Don’t think PTSD was “invented” then, certainly not in HMF.

Things seen and done can get into your head and never leave, I know that only too well.
