Remember the Hudl lady that I worked so hard to please? Her dad has sent her a new tablet, a 10″ Neocore NC1E and I have been bullied into setting it up for her. Just done that this afternoon, not difficult now I have all her account details. But. It. Is. Horrible.

Really, really horrible. Resolution is not as good as my Lenovo 8″, which means with a 10.1″ screen the picture is worse by a long shot. I knew that her folks were going to buy her something, so I gave her several recommendations including my Lenovo, which she liked. I’ve looked up the price and it is a few £ cheaper than the Lenovo. I told her specifically not to ask for a 10″ tablet but she took no notice. Why do people ask for advice and then ignore it? Anyway, tomorrow I will take the thing round and set it up on her Wi-Fi, then I’m off to MOT the C-Max for the first and last time before I give it back to Motability and bring home the Tucson in 2 weeks. Thursday we are off to That Lunden, so if she ****s it up I am away until Saturday.

By setting  it up, you know your setting yourself up for lifetime support.

I’d of told her, “I know nothing of neocore, never owned one sorry.”

It’s what I done with Windows 8 botherers

This is a disaster waiting to happen. What a load of tat.

Don’t give advice if you can help it. It’ll be ignored. And if it’s not ignored, it’ll be your fault if there’s even the slightest issue (even of the owner’s making). It’ll be your fault even if your advice *was* ignored, because the owner will blame everyone but him- or herself.

Welcome to my (daily) world! Let’s just say the advice thing isn’t limited to IT support.

My day job, we’ve undertaken some modelling work for a client and it hasn’t worked, something we’ve told them all along, yet they still paid us to undertake it…

The usual comment I used to get when I was in such a situation was that it was obviously my fault because “I did not go in with the positive attitude required to make it work!”.

[edit] The only time I remember ‘winning’ in that situation was when I ran a parallel quick & dirty pilot to demonstrate an approach we thought would work.

The only reason I did this for the lady, is because she is such a very good person. She cares for two housebound others in our Senior Ghetto and always thinks of others before herself. Not a god-botherer, doesn’t go to church, just one of those rare people that cares. She is also an epileptic, two days ago she fitted at home and wrecked her knee, without telling anyone she phoned a taxi and went to A&E alone. That is her nature: looks out for others but will not bother anyone when she needs help.

So this morning I took the tablet round and set it up for her, leaving a sheet of instructions. She is not stupid, just has never had the kind of work that involved Tech: computers were a mystery to her. I have finally got her to agree to attend a Senior’s computer education course at the local college, to get the basics and help her understand what it’s all about. I was quite firm in telling her not to broadcast this to anyone else, stating that I will NOT help anyone else, this is a one-off. She knows we are off to London tomorrow, but this afternoon she phoned, happy to say thank you very much, she was using the tablet and had begun using Google Play Store to add apps she liked. I love it when a plan comes together…

The answer is then, guys, that I really could not refuse, and if you knew the lady, you would have to have a heart of stone to refuse help. She had an abusive husband before divorcing and moving here some years ago and her two kids live many miles away. She rarely sees her grandchildren, so FB is great for her. I was happy to help, but anyone else gets the exit sign.

Bob, I get involved in these lost causes and probably always will do for the same reason you do.

Do <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>not</span> beat yourself up about it, but neither should you be afraid to say “I told you so” and then “No, I can do no more”.

Absolutely, Bob. Some people are deserving of help, and you’ve done well. I think she’ll gain lots by attending that course.

Thanks guys, sorry I have not replied, been away in London at a funeral and stayed a couple of days around Beckenham, forgot to add a Data pack before I went. No difference anyway as the hotel WiFi was carp. (but meals and room fantastic for the money.)
