Did you know that, on average, 17,000 people a year die from Flu related illness just in england ? The death rate is 2% across all ages but that includes a much higher rate for those over 65.
The source for those figures is public health england so they SHOULD be accurate.
Just saying. Some people should get a grip over Corona virus.
March 20, 2020 at 9:02 am #41881Wheels I’m afraid that the CFR you quote for typical influenza is total Trump BS. For our usual flu the number of deaths per case is <0.1%.
Italy’s CFR is running about the Wiki rate of 4.5%, but now that China is treating with chloroquine phosphate the rate is down to about 1%. Incidentally if our medical profession did not have the ‘not invented here’ syndrome Boris would not have to wait 3 months and thousands of deaths before announcing his ‘miracle treatment’ and the corner being turned.
March 20, 2020 at 9:04 am #41882Also did you know…
Pneumonia is not a specific disease but a medical condition where the Alveoli start to fill with fluid, making Oxygen exchange difficult.
The causes can be a bacteria, a virus, an auto immune response or exposure to various toxic substances.
If your doctor tells you you have pneumonia your question should be why ?
March 20, 2020 at 9:21 am #41883Sorry Ed I mixed up my figures a bit. The death rate for Flu in England is <1.0% and the current rate for corona is 2%.
March 20, 2020 at 9:28 am #41884Well, Edp, you obviously you did not bring it, but the island’s first case was confirmed yesterday. Recently returned from Spain.
And our first NOT “self isolated” idiot is now locked up!
When the UK introduces draconian measures, the Manx Gov. promptly doubles them, and Joe twitter Public is encouraged to “dob in” any miscreants. Not sure if first “lock up” was dobbed in or not.
I shall be out with (a few of) my Saturday bike group, but it will be ‘bikes only for a short coffee free open air meeting.
With the predicted strong east wind, and down overlooking “The Chasms”, we should be able to watch the Choughs, maybe the Ravens, then go home with stinking colds!
Les.
March 20, 2020 at 9:28 am #41885Out of interest the peak death rate for Flu in the last 10 years was 26,000 in a year. Didn’t even hear about that until I just looked.

March 20, 2020 at 12:16 pm #41888Wheels the problem with mortality rates is that all of the ones for flu-like diseases include wild guesses on the total number of cases including those which were so mild that the patient just felt a bit ill. The Covid-19 CFR of 4+% is based on confirmed cases so today’s number of 3269 cases and 144 deaths gives you a CFR of 4.4%. Chris Whitty’s number of 1% is based on the sheer guesswork of the total number of cases including those who are completely asymptomatic. That guess would be acceptable if in fact we tested sufficiently many people to get some meaningful statistics, but our grossly underfunded NHS cannot afford the testing regimes of places like Korea, China or Singapore.
March 20, 2020 at 12:53 pm #41889Statistics be damned, you don’t see the scenes from the Italian hospitals with seasonal flu.
It all shows are unprepared the world in general is and we seem to have wasted weeks. With regards the economics I’d have expected some sort of disaster modelling and therefore a plan. But it seems not.
March 20, 2020 at 2:41 pm #41890The ones who have got on top of it (other than China’s draconian measures) are South Korea and Singapore. In both cases they tested anyone who had the slightest signs of the disease by investing heavily in testing kits. If anyone was found to have it they were immediately quarantined for at least 14 days (forcibly if necessary), and interrogated to find all their contacts, who in turn would also be tested and quarantined for 14 days irrespective of test results.
These two countries have also been using the ‘wonder drug’ chloroquine phosphate since the end of February – soon after the Chinese Center for Disease Control recommended its use. Our hospitals are not allowed to use it as it isn’t licensed for covid-19 treatment despite being amongst the safer drugs.
Our idiot Government ignored all the evidence, and hoped for the best and planned for the best by not spending anything on preparation. They then BS’d about ‘new’ scientific evidence having ignored Imperial College London for seven weeks. One can only hope that those who got us into this mess suffer a taste of what they have dished out to the population.
March 20, 2020 at 7:01 pm #41913Good luck Bob. I hope this cheers you up a bit. In Germany they’re panic buying sausages and cheese, its the Wurst Kase scenario 😉
Thanks Dave, I needed that. 😀 Mentioning Kase reminds me of taking a mate to Germany many years ago for a Munich and Fuessen holiday. Breakfast being ‘continental’, he mistook the packets of Bavarian smoked cheese for butter and spread it very liberally on his toast, all before I got back to my seat with a plateful of eggs and cold cuts. His face was a picture: it was the first time he had ever been abroad and his life had been a lot more sheltered than my own. At least that was a mistake he never made again. Because we had been mates from schooldays, I just explained without even a smile.
Same mate on the coach, going down the Autobahn, stated that “Ausfahrt” must be a very big city, as there were so many signs for it. Again, I didn’t even smile, just explained.

I'm out.March 21, 2020 at 6:46 am #41914Ausfahrt 😄 I was expecting something else 😉 but that’s just my mind.
I do like a continental breakfast – when on the continent, the baked goods are always so tasty. The only exception was Berlin last year, but that must have been the otherwise excellent hotel as there were the usual 3 Bäckerei within a stones throw.
March 21, 2020 at 7:29 am #41915Chloroquine Phosphate is now a WHO licensed trial in which the UK is participating. God the NIH and racism of the medical profession makes me sick. Three months of killing people just to satisfy their professional egos, and repeat work already done in Asia.
Chloroquine phosphate is a very safe generic drug, and cheap as chips – a one week course could be given out to anyone who fails the 10 sec breath holding test. This would cost £5 at the very most and have the very real prospect of saving thousands of lives, and offload hospitals and critical care facilities. It wouldn’t even matter very much if this was a ‘false’ indication of covid-19 and the drug was taken by error as all the medical downsides (mainly to eyesight and liver) only come with protracted use.
March 22, 2020 at 5:11 pm #41948No 10 denies claim Dominic Cummings argued to ‘let old people die’
The Sunday Times article certainly rings true as he appears to have opinions that are right of Attilla the Hun, and doing so would have generally positive economics.
March 23, 2020 at 7:07 am #41960It’s not often I agree with Piers Morgan, but the time is over for Boris saying you’re all naughty boys and I’ll have to spank your botties if you don’t stop.
We are now overtaking the Italian curve which is truly frightening. We have to get this lock down sorted now. Proper queueing at supermarkets etc. the scrums at opening time are ridiculous.
March 23, 2020 at 7:34 am #41961I’ve just got back from my first civilised, non-frustrating, successful shop ( well 95% of it any way because I forgot the list!!!) Doh!! Got there about 6.30 and there was stock on the shelves.😃
March 23, 2020 at 8:12 pm #41967Today has been a total rush. Packing stuff this morning after my usual 2 hour bathroom medical issues. Shopping at (my best) speed in Morrisons and Louth shops, quick lunch, up to the estate agent to sign up and take keys. This was done by taking paperwork passed through their letterbox, sitting in car to read and sign (in many places) then return documents through letterbox, receive keys, off to new pad.
Enter new pad, temperature close to the Outer Circle of Hell inside, all rads at maximum, boiler set to High and 24 Hours. Rectified that, inspected, refused to sign “Cleanliness & Condition” as there is a failing bulb, rust and peeling paint on the heated towel rail and no instructions regarding the heating system. There is a panel by the door which has alphanumeric characters with Egyptian-style Hieroglyphics, no clue what it all means or how to set/reset it. Home, dash off an email to agent with photos of towel rail and strongly worded request that this be rectified. Plus we had paid for work to be done to the shower riser bar and that is not done. Somebody is in a lorra bother.
Then receive an email from Shell Energy to say thanks for changing my tariff. WHAAATTT? I didn’t have one to change, that’s the last tenant! First thing tomorrow, contact EDF and carry out switch. Lots of mail for previous tenant, all with a redirect reference number on the worktop. Wrote that number on each letter, that goes into the postbox. Cheeky bugga!
Still packing to finish and awaiting a CT scan, 3 separate medical appointments. I don’t have time to self-isolate, Boris!
Louth town was very, very quiet today. Yes it’s an old Georgian market town, but sleepy it is usually not. Always busy even on non-market days. Sitting in the Cornmarket and seeing just 2 other cars, was just weird. Driving through town and not having to wait at any one of a myriad of junctions, was even more weird. So where were all the scumbags who had taken all the eggs, bog roll, pasta, tinned soup and biscuits? Yes: my favourite McVities digestives, all gone! Are they now going to live on biccies, because the food they stockpiled last week is either rotten or eaten? I had to get Morrisons own digestives, that is barbaric, civilisation is at an end!
And I exit, sobbing quietly into my tea as I dunk another crappy digestive…. 😥
Stay well guys.

I'm out.March 23, 2020 at 8:22 pm #41968Good luck Bob. I’ve just had the dreaded NHS text message which I guess a lot here will be having too.
Spent yesterday ramming home to the 84 yo m-i-l that she must stop going out, she just cannot stay in. Being deaf and with crappy eyesight she hasn’t been watching the news properly and seems to think it’s a kill joy move. I think we got there in the end, I reminded her how a minor chest infection took her out of action for months last year, but I’ll bet when the Mrs phones later she’ll have been out.
It’s not just the young being reckless, the older generation seem hell bent on self destruction too. Have you seen the scrum at the supermarkets for OAP opening time?
March 23, 2020 at 8:37 pm #41970Best of luck Bob.
Sounds like you might need some.
Dave, I’m waiting to see if I’m on the Welsh list, apparently it’s 70,000 odd people.
That doesn’t sound like much for the whole of Wales.
Had a bargain brand new TV delivered today, Mr dpd was very understanding, I didn’t open the door until he was back at the van, I checked the box and agreed with him that all was well.
The ‘signature’ was DOA and my surname. 😳
March 24, 2020 at 10:51 am #41997Well, it appears that I’m an optimist – I’ve rescheduled our Spain trip for October. If this thing persists, I’ve still got the original insurance for the trip so will cancel it at that point.😀
