Wouldn’t have known anything about how things have move on since I last bought a Humax 1800R for the kitchen tv, so thanks for the link.
Bought a new, not reconditioned, FVP5000T direct from Humax because it was cheaper than anywhere else. 3 tuners, so it states that it can record 4 programmes whilst watching a fifth. Not quite sure how that works with just 3 tuners but it will save me juggling with all the +1 hour channels especially for those programmes that run for 70 or 75 minutes like the last few episodes of The Yorkshire Vet.

You would probably like my shed as I have two sets of spanners, several socket sets & various other tools mounted on a wall board. Everyone who enters for the first time goes Wow! Not seen a shed this tidy & well laid out before.
One of the benefits of Aldi & Lidl is the good quality, well priced, Chrome vanadium spanner sets that they offer from time to time. Not that I use them for the car much these days, more the bike or general DIY.

Hi Mark, my daughter would very much like this if it’s still available please. It’s as much to use in my car as hers.
I’m old fashioned, do my homework, print off maps etc before traveling & carry a road atlas whereas she does everything on her phone. It does save squabbles over map reading though as daughter reads out directions from Google maps.

I agree. I have an old laptop running Mint just to familiarise myself with at least one version of Linux. Everything I do, there’s no personal data not even email, is done on trust. If what I do works, I presume everything is ok.
With Windows, you just get a feeling when something isn’t quite right. I’ve only ever suffered one drive-by virus & my anti virus didn’t know a thing about it. I knew within 10 seconds, but was still too slow in turning the power off.

Windows Defender also slows down the opening of large folders. It’s as if it’s forgotten the files are clean & has to check them again.
Turning off Defender for a few seconds really speeds things up.

For anyone who really wants to distance themselves from the data harvesting giants, then Solid might be a good place to start

I hope you firmly instructed your friend to leave everything alone to get on with it.
Out of reach is good, sole exception being the one who turns it all off before going to bed. Wonders why he does not get the speed he should all the time.
My friend is the type that lays under a car with you at gone midnight, with frost on his legs, to change a clutch, because the car is needed for work later that morning. Thus it’s easy to forgive his mistakes.
I’ll help anybody who is willing to learn. It doesn’t take long to work out those who think you are a free service to save them money.
To that end, I got a phone call one evening from a chap in the RAF who’s daughter went to school with mine & who’s PC I had fixed. The conversation started with, ‘My mate’s got this laptop’. I stopped him there & told him that I wasn’t a free service for all his mates in the RAF. Funnily enough, I haven’t had a phone call from him since, but as he’s an aircraft technician, he (& his wife who is very quick on the uptake) only needed a little guidance before realising that they could do most things without further help.
Once I understand something, I seem to have a knack of breaking down the information & passing it on in a way that others can comprehend.
Not sure what you mean by ‘wonders why he does not get the speed he should all the time’. Did you mean because his mobile is using the normal 4G rather than his hub?
I know ISPs state that an ADSL router should initially be left on for 7-10 days to ‘sync’. I suspect this is as much to do with fending off phone calls from new customers rather than for technical reasons.
I have always turned off the modem/router at night & back on in the morning but I’ve been on fibre for 6 years & don’t recall having variable speed problems other than the standard contention issues.--

Until JCD generously sent me the EE Brightbox, I had no chance, now it picks up 4G! Seriously chuffed with this and much Karma to JCD, but it does mean I am now pinned to EE. Well worth it atm, though. EE made a big mistake in stopping production and sale of the Brightboxes, but if you take EE, Connects via Ethernet to your router, mine is high on a bookcase top, about 1½ metres away from the router. Working well still with my miserable 2.5+ Mbps. Edit: looks like you get it free now with EE Broadband only: – http://tinyurl.com/yafxresl pob lwc Bob.
Last year a friend of mine, who has been with EE since the Wanadoo days, was having intermitent problems with his original ADSL, single ethernet port orange router – never whilst I was there though. I set up a TalkTalk router that I had spare & left him to it.
Earlier this year he phoned to say that the Orange router, which he had reverted to, had finally given up the ghost & would I come & swap it out for the TalkTalk router.
He had lost the logon details that I used previously to set the router up & had reset the router back to its default settings. A phone call to EE had elicited no help, thus the phone call to me.
He had no paperwork other than an ancient letter from Orange that included his account number which we took into the local EE shop. All I can say is that they were brilliant. My friend answered the personal questions & explained the situation then I took over for the more technical answers. The assistant got on the phone & within a few minutes had got the technical department to text my friend with the details needed to set up the TalkTalk router & also arranged for a new EE Brightbox router to be sent out.
Of course I got the job of installing the Brightbox & setting up the laptop, printers & Ipad to connect via wi-fi.
The TalkTalk router is tucked away in a drawer, just in case.--

Thanks. That’s £32 I’ll never see again. 🙂
Had to use Internet Explorer as I kept getting ‘Not allowed on this server’ messages halfway through whilst browsing with Pale Moon.

*Yes, on a Saturday! Apparently they are doing that now to relieve pressure of CT/MRI scans. It was weird walking past all the other clinics and absolutely deserted, not used to seeing that.
The John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford has been doing non critical surgery on weekends for a couple of years. Traveling is so much easier & there are loads of spaces in the car parks.
Even better are the clinics held in our local hospital as the 10 miles of A40 to Oxford is stop start after 7.10am & an accident can close the road all day.

I haven’t promoted anything by Iobit since they got caught stealing from Malwarebytes. Not only did they, initially, deny it but they wiped all mention of it from their forums.
One Chinese company to avoid IMHO.

Windows 10 October Update
Microsoft has taken the unprecedented step of pulling a Windows 10 release a mere four days after its arrival amid a clamour of users complaining about files not being where they had left them.

Come to Witney (the ex prime minister’s constituency) where the parking is free. It pulls in shoppers from 20-25 miles away.
Doesn’t stop shops from closing though. Empty premises used to be rapidly taken up by estate agents, then charity shops & now eating places.
